Each one of those car's bodies was hand built in a custom builder's shop out of aluminium. Then they shipped the completed bodies to VeeDub for assembly. They're quite the collector's item these days.

Aluminum?

"Custom builder's shop"!?

This, from Wiki: "Some of the most well-known cars produced by Karmann in the 20th century are the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet (1949-1980), and, most closely associated with the Karmann name, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Between 1955 and 1974, 443,482 VW Karmann Ghias were manufactured, placing their own sports car-style body on the chassis of the Volkswagen Beetle."

There's a reason there are so few around, Ken! They sit, the 'roof' leaks, they get soggy and they revert back to iron ore.

In the driveway, if you're not careful!

And the ragtops would almost twist in half when you hit a railroad crossing at an angle.

Other than that, they were WAY cool!

I preferred my '71 ragtop Super Beetle, though. Bastard was heavy...

Ok, I should have said "coach" builder rather than "custom," but the point remains. They were hand made bodies (which makes repairs very difficult) versus 1000's banged out on assembly lines. And I know they were fraught with issues in their day, but time heals all...

There was a shop near me in Escondido called Monster Miata that was building these things.

A buddy of mine worked for years at a shop that made roll cages for the Miata cup cars. The best was when he worked at Caldwell motorsports which made racing parts for the Viper motor. You outta hear one of those babies on the dyno.

Here's a tracktoy one of the guys I Auto-X with has built (among other things.........):

LS1, 5-speed, essentially gutted interior - weighs about 19XX lbs - would probably put down mid-9's in the 1/4-mile; if he'd put a rollcage in it (it's not dragstrip-legal the way he's got it set up right now).

There used to be this girl in HS with long curly red hair and a new tan convertible Karman Ghia, she'd wear this long camel hair coat or a redish leather one with a white scarf, hip hugger bell bottoms and these platform boots,........God she was hot, me with my oily old surplus army field jacket, greasy ponytail and 250 Bultaco Cafe` Racer didn't even exist in her world but I would have happily drank her bathwater just for a wiff...

Yea... i know that feeling..... of course i was also totally oblivious in HS. had a gorgeous girl with (rather funny) curly red hair that flirted with me for months, it went totally over my head.... now today? **** does that piss me off.... lol then again most girls in my school ignored me with my blonde pony tail, leather bomber jacket and illegal CL100 (used to... cough. Borrow it from my grandfather and ride, through the woods, to school on it)
