questions about labor
I recently did some work on my boss' honda vtx 1300. i put an vh sideshot exhaust on and did an oil change. i didnt know what to charge him. does anyone know what a dealer would charge in texas?

About $85/hr, plus oil & filter, plus shop supplies (typically another $5-7).

But the hours would be "Book Time" - the time the Book sez it takes, regardless of how long it actually takes. Except maybe in the case of the exhaust - "custom" work usually doesn't have a "Book".

Maybe if you do it for free you will get a raise.

That's probably about right, I'd think twice about working on other peoples bikes though, specially the boss's. That can bite you in the ass and cause all kinds of misery if the bike takes a sh*t down the road...

I pulled the carbs off my old boss' '90 Shadow 1100. Cleaned them etc. lots of time getting the bike to not turn the pipes cherry red after 5 minutes of running. I did it pro-bono but in retrospect wish I would have raped the bastard.

yea i thought about that extensively while doing the work. its all good though i been through school to do this stuff and its really jus on and off work. ill see what he says when i say 150 which is a steal in my opinion.

I would have installed JC Whitney novelty whistles in the pipes that plays "Anchors Away" when the bike hits 3000 rpm. It's good for scaring dogs and ex-squids.
