OK, a spare helmet........ yeah........

That way seems safer than the spare hangin' in the lock off to the side.

And you can also use it to haul around small pets!

I had a similar rig on my bike.

I replaced the stock leatherette grab strap with the nylon belt part of a worn out fanny pack.

Melted a 'bolthole' in either end with a hot screwdriver, and viola!, I had an adjustable tiedown strap.
