I'd be ok with a 650cc bike for 2up long distance riding if I wasn't getting close to maxing out my throttle. I've heard that if I push the bike too much that it greatly diminishes its fuel economy. My little scoot suffers big time on the highway compared to in town.

I think that's why I was initially leaning towards an 1100, but if the 650 would easily carry us along the road at 70, without taking a big hit on fuel economy, then I'd have no complaints.

As you can tell I haven't much riding experience with larger than 500cc engines. Not sure what to expect given the conditions.

No you won't be maxing your throttle. My wife and I rode all over on a 650 twin back in the 70s that had maybe 45hp and I got 40+ mpg out of it regularly.

I guess I should consider:

Suzuki Bandit 650/1250
Suzuki V-Strom 650/1000
Suzuki SV650/1000
Yamaha Virago 750

Had to throw the Yamaha in the mix to make it interesting.

Of the above mentioned bikes, and any others that you may think of, which would be the best order of meeting my needs. Of course, I would go check out each of them regardless. What fun!

Remember, I need:

lower seat height is better
need something that is flexible (in town and long-distance riding 2up - smaller people)
COMFORT for both rider and passenger
plus everything else from the initial post

Ignore my avatar...

Check out the older Bonnevilles or Thunderbirds. You should find one in your budget, and they are reliable as hammers.

Fairly low seats, too. I've a buddy who is height-challenged, and he rides a '98 Thunderbird Sport.

I do like the look of the Bonnevilles.

I was hoping to find some cruiser styled bikes that would meet my requirements. The Suzuki's might be a little to "sporty" for me. Nothing against them. Just not sure yet.

The V-stars are heavier than I want. The Hondas are ok, but still have a lot of that excessive "bulkiness" factor.

Maybe that is a BIG reason we ain't in the 70's any more!

Well, duh! My only thought about that is that there's so much concern about having a million jillion horsepower that people no longer understand that 61hp can be plenty adequate..... unless you are a Finn living in Brazil. Or is it a Brazilian living in Finland? Where has that nut been lately anyhow?

I dig some space these days since I'm gettin old. Horsepower isn't much of a concern, but 2 up on a 650 ain't my idea of fun any more. I do miss our little 64 horsepower buddy though. Maybe he's still trying to do rolling burnouts, or maybe he's out shopping for a Rune. Can't tell these days.

I found a 78 Kawi KZ650 that was kinda tempting. He said it worked great for him on long rides, but with 2up he didn't know. Wonder how something like that would be?
