Default Motorcycle Magazines

Yesterday, Cycle World sent me a subscription renewal offer. I still have about a year left on the 24 month subscription I already have. What was interesting to me was the price: $36 for 48 months. That's about $0.75 per issue.

Can they print and mail the damn thing for 75 cents? Or is the advertising so valuable that it's worth sending it out at cost, or even a loss? Or, is the magazine industry so depressed by what's going on with new media, that they're desperate?

I think all of your guesses have some accuracy.

MCNews is nowhere near as cheap, mostly because it is not supported by advertising.

Regarding your mail offer: I wait for the school magazine drives. Same price or less, and the school gets compensation. And they will add whatever period you purchase to your existing account. Most of the time.

I got about three months of double Motorcyclist this last go-round.

My Motorcyclist subscription finally ran out last week - I haven't even cracked-open probably the last 13-15 issues, just threw 'em in the box in the corner of the bedroom.

I've been beleaguered by pleas to "re-up" for like the last 6 months, which seem to take an alternating tone between offers to fellate me and pay me to accept another subscription.............

KPaul, are you moonlighting as a Magazine Salesman nowadays?

I don't understand the acrimony you guys have towards print magazines. I subscribe to several magazines, and I find them more tan worth the subscription cost.

Do I agree with everything written? Of course not, but I read them, nonetheless, exposing myself to the wide-world of moto-thought.

I expect that we may see price hikes for subscriptions soon, unless stuff starts turning around soon and advertising picks up.

It's more of a time thing for me - I don't even read printed-media on the can anymore, my PDA has about 60 or so books on it at any one time.

Remind me never to hold your PDA for you.

I believe if they offer you the low, low subscription extension, it gives them better numbers to show to the potential advertisers in the future.

The Golden Handcuffs you know.

Why you not ask Klazy Ken! You stupid!

I love my magazines. I would never stop subscribing to at least 2 or 3 bike magazines. In fact, I'm considering adding "Rider" to my subscriptions. I also take a vintage sports car magazine from Hemmings.

I like the portability and ease of use, the photos seem more "real" to me, and I absorb information better from a printed page than a screen. I suppose I'm a "crossover" from analog to digital age. I exploit both, but if I really need or want to understand something, I will print it if it's not on paper. Guess I'm just wired that way...
