Default Bike Insurance

So my last two bikes, both '82 Honda Nighthawks (One a 450, the other a 750) were $12/month for insurance. I just called my insurance company with a generic 2000 SV650 VIN. He quoted me $1500/year! He said naked bikes are considered "Sport Bikes" with most insurance companies. He recommended trying to get a quote from Progressive (different company than I have.. lol)!

My question to you.. since the SV650 now seems out of reach (I'd rather not pay $100+ a month for bike insurance), would an 89+ Honda Hawk 650 or a 91+ Honda Nighthawk 600+ fall in that "Sport Bike" category and kill my insurance as well? I've sent my rep a VIN from an 89 Hawk, but waiting to hear back from him as of the moment....

Contact Kirk Harrington, our resident bike insurance dude. I don't have his number handy, but if you Google ACE Specialty Insurance you'll find it. Best deal I could find, Kirk's price was literally hundreds less than the online quotes I got. It was so much cheaper I had them go over the coverage to make sure it was the same as the quotes. And, you're working with a great guy and his way cool sister.

This is a question for Ace to answer (he's the insurance guy on this site). But you can also just get a quote from Progressive via their website online. And from Geico, too.

A quote is going to differ depending on your location, age, etc. I've got Progressive for my three bikes. But just for comparison, I'm in my forties, located in the Chicago suburbs, and if I were to insure just my '99 1100XX as a new customer it would probably cost around $800 per year for full coverage with a $250 deductable and $5K medical.

An SV650 is going to cost less to insure than an SV650S. That's because the SV650 is usually considered a standard.

The difference between adding a Ninja 250 (which has a fairing, but is only a 250) to my policy and adding a Z750S (which is a naked bike, but is a 750) turned out to be just $40 per year (that is, $40/yr more for the 750).

So get an online quote or two. It won't cost you anything but a few minutes of your time. Also, Progressive (and probably a few other companies) will give you a discount as a new/first-year customer.

For your SV I would call Foremost Insurance 800-527-3905 or Dairyland Insurance 800-532-2525. I don't know if PSIC writes up there but 800-303-5000.
They will all give you the quote and locate a local agent if you what a face to put with the insurance company. Progressive just changed their rates for this segment of bikes so you might be alright calling them.
If you need any more help call my office 877-571-RIDE(7433).
