I like the comparo though. Good article guys.

Buell has been doing it for years and still keeps the price competitive.

Do the rubber mount Sportys like the Thunderstorm heads as much as the pre '04 models? Or are they not the thing to do anymore?

I see Zippers just ports the current heads. I think they are good enough not to need the Thunderstorm heads.

If, nay when, I get my pre '04 Sporty I'm getting Thunderstorm heads damnit.

Pre 04, they need em. 1250 kit, Thunderstorm heads with Stage 3 porting, Red Shift Cams Mikuni HSR 45 carb, and go eat those XR1200's for lunch.

My plan is something like that, but not so extreme. I want to start with an 883R.

That would be the route you want to go for the 883R. Big bore, cams, ported Thunderstorm heads , large Mikuni delivering the juice.

I'd like to go as far as I can without replacing the carb. The lower gearing of the 883 would make for an awesome low/midrange punch.

Still, although itís the highest-performance H-D ever offered for mass consumption (sorry, the ill-fated and semi-street-legal VR1000 doesnít count)
I guess we've already forgotten about the bastard stepchild VRSCR StreetRod. While it was heavier and had a longer wheelbase, it had 20+ more horses.

I would have expected the Monster to outperform the XR to a greater degree. Interesting. Perhaps H-D isn't as clueless as we like to think.

The Street Rod is a pretty nice bike. Bit on the gawky looking side maybe but a good solid performer. I'd take one.
