So there I was last saturday, two of my daughters in the car, plus my grandaughter in a car seat plus her diaper bag and a trunk full of groceries and I'm thinking "this just isn't going to work"...
I had went from an '02 Explorer which I'd had for years of trouble free service to a brand new 2011 Ford Fusion a month or so ago, because I wanted a change of pace. While I really liked the car it just wasn't going to fit in with my lifestyle, a point I'd neglected to give sufficient thought to it seemed. The solution was obvious and a little searching produced a 2010 Explorer XLT 4x4 in showroom condition for $22,988. Thanks to Fords generous rebates when I bought the Fusion, the cars likewise showroom condition and highly desirable 4 cyl made a swap easy and with no real amount of my money lost transaction, I more or less "rented" the car for 6 weeks. At anyrate I'm back in an Explorer, the fourth one I've owned over the years and happy as can be hauling crap around like a deranged Fred Sanford, except taller and younger and paler. The Fusion is an excellent car and I'd recommend one to anyone looking for a good economical mid-size sedan, it just didn't work in my situation...

Going with more storage/cargo room doesn't seem to work with the LOML. The more room, the more crap she hauls around.
And her parking area at school won't accommodate a tractor-trailer.

I liked the traditional station wagon layout that people bought before minivans and SUVs got popular. Some of them were pretty damn neat, with powered rear gates, the bench seats that faced each other in back, even dual A/C systems. Of course they were total gas hogs; I remember pumping 30+ gallons of gas into them when I worked in a gas station.

Yeah, I got a Honda Element precisely so that I could haul my dogs and bicycles around without hassle. The two rear seats haven't been in the car for years.
You got the 2010 model because the newer ones are smaller, right? Or would you have gotten a newer model if the price was right? |

The 2010 are the last truck based body on frame ones, better off road capabilities and more towing capacity. We go tent camping quite a bit and I'd like to get a boat one of these days so it just works better for me than the new crossover style. I looked at an Edge too which was nice but not really suited to my needs either. The new Explorers are horrendously expensive as well, which didn't help matters but even if the money was right the 2010 I got is in as-new condition anyway so I would have still got it.

Nah!
Now, the old Explorer and Mountaineer that my Mom and Dad drive... Those V-8's cannot pass a gas station!
