Mah fellow MOrons, my old Eastfield S&W Riot Pump is getting a mite long in the tooth, and I was wondering what y'all thought was the best bang for your buck when it comes to self defence shotguns?
I'm thinking anywhere between five hundred and three hundred bucks. And it has to be a pump gun, no autoloaders (to jam in the worst possible time). Thanks...

Remington 870. With the deer slug barrel. And 8 round mag. There are more accessories for an 870 than any other shotgun on the market.

The good ol' 870 or maybe a Mossberg 500.
Find one with the 'base' 30" Full choke, non-ribbed barrel. Trim it to about 1-1/2" from the front of the magazine cap. Deburr. Here are some good training videos: Guns & Ammo 2.0 Videos Happy Hunting!

If you want a pump this is the one. In tactical trim.

I'm torn on the pistol grip. I've got the 'AR' looking one, with the shoulder stock and pistol grip, which is okay.
The 'cruiser' grip can really f-up your wrist if you don't have good control of the piece with your non-trigger hand. Especially if you tend to be fascinated by heavy recoil, as I am.

I have an old maxi-combo mossberg that came with the optional short barrel and pistol grip. In home protection mode its only about 2ft long. Been a good gun.

Looks like the 870 is king, but I've got a line on a 1896 Winchester trench shotgun with a bayonette lug. That was the model where you could hold the trigger down and just keep pumping...exposed hammer, extractor, a real work of art, but the guy wants $900.00. Anybody need a nice Browning BT99 Trap shotgun?

Those BT99's are sweet!
I hauled a cherry one across the country to sell an old shipmate in San Diego. My Boss gave it to me to help catch up on back pay. I already had my 870 Wingmaster tweaked for the range, and needed the money more than the gun. Sure was a nice piece... Say, you didn't buy it from a crippled Bos'n's Mate, did you?

Nope, it's my old trap gun, got a Monte Carlo stock, morgan pad and three polychokes.
They closed up most of the trap places around here (lead posioning the earth!) so I'm left with the memories of a shell bag on my belt, and the score keeper yelling "25" with my last shot. It's a sweet shotgun, made in Japan. But a Browning at any distance.
