A friend of mine had a Benelli 12ga Auto/pump (it was switchable - don't ask me how) that held 8+1 - if you could stand to squeeze the trigger that rapidly, you could get all 9 empties in the air at before the first hit the ground..............

It. Was. Bad. Ass.

I think he later traded it for a trashbag-full of weed.

Go ahead. But true combat shotguns are pump action for a reason. It's too easy to deform the shells and cause a misfeed.

In Nam we had Remington 870s. Rugged, reliable, inexpensive and a plethora of accessories make it one of the best choices for home defense. Much much better than any handgun. It's foolish to pick a handgun when any other choice is possible for the intended use.

An old 870 with a pistol grip and a 20" slug barrel.

Seriously bad news.

Sure, you could get a cheap 30" full choke barrel (a lot of the older Wingmasters came with that barrel) and cut it down to just clear the front of the mag tube, but why bother?

Some high brass #7-1/2 shot, and you've got all you will ever need for home defense.

Now, if you want to take the 'aggressor' down in the yard, maybe not.

Alternate 00 buck and Deer slugs. Good easy up to 50 yards.

Pistols are handy because you can stick 'em in your pocket. Hard to carry a shotgun around in this day and age.

As I said if you have a choice pistols suck. Too many people buy one for home defense who aren't competent enough to use them. You read about people shooting at burglars and such and missing them within their homes all the time.

Yeah, but it makes the burgler poop their pants every time!

I have this friend. He has another friend, who just so happens to have a taste in.... shall we say "less than unmarried" Women.....

One day, he's over as some gal's house (probably within minutes of her husband leaving), and is upstairs in her bedroom, has just gotten his pants off, when Hubby essentially kicks-in the front door, and comes pounding up the stairs, screamin' he's gonna KILL whomever he finds in the bedroom what don't belong there.....

What to do? Why, bail out the window into the shrubbery, a storey below, of course. So he does so, pants and boots in-hand. He gets up, dusts off, checks-over himself..... and he hears the slide rack on a shotgun from the former escape-window above......

Without even pausing to ponder on it, he abandons pants, boots, and dignity to the wind, and begins running for his life. As he manages to make the alleyway he casts a glance behind just in time to see the shotgun leveled at his arse....... All he could scream was "IT'S GONNA HURT!!!" before the blast rang-out across the neighborhood........

He survived. No, it wasn't me; wasn't my friend either.

But it was funny, in retrospect.
