Default Racism Alive and Well on Conservative Talk Radio

Beck: ‘African-American is a bogus, PC, made-up term. I mean, that’s not a race.’
Today on his radio show, Glenn Beck wanted to discuss the census. “Apparently the census has come out,” he said. Beck’s co-host then chimed in, “Yeah and there’s a little confusion because there’s three boxes you can check if you’re a certain race. … I don’t know what the race is because there’s three different terms for them. Black, African-American, or Negro.” Instead of having any consideration to take issue with the term “Negro,” Beck launched into a tirade against “African-American”:

BECK: African-American is a bogus, PC, made-up term. I mean, that’s not a race. Your ancestry is from Africa and now you live in America. Ok so you were brought over — either your family was brought over through the slave trade or you were born here and your family emigrated here or whatever but that is not a race.

Speaking as a middle-aged white guy (apparently the cause and owner of all the world's problems), I agree to the basic premise (Not necessarily all the other crap that gets slung around.)

Now, if I can get the U.S. Census to add a category of English/Scottish/Irish/German/AngryOldMan-American, I'll change my opinion.

The way I see it, if you are from a country (as in, Born there or spent the majority of your Wonder Years there), then you are a Whatever-American.

Otherwise, you need to find a non-hyphenated tag.

I had this argument tossed at me after I expressed amusement when I found out my neighbors blond, blue eyed wife considered herself an African-American. She was born and raised in Egypt.

No, I never saw her dance.

Is a white person born in Africa and now living here an African-American?

My neighbor's wife thought so.

That's what she put in the various forms that asked the question. It seems there was a history of heated arguments because of it.

Holy sh**, Ken is reaching.

Ken, do you really, honestly, truly believe that making fun of the term "African-American" is racist?

You must be pulling our chains.

A co-worker told me her husband was African-American. When I met him he was lily-white and wearing the white-guy uniform (racism alert!) of a blue blazer and khaki slacks. This guy was Wonder Bread and grape Nehi.

My co-worker laughed and said, "Gotcha! His parents were missionaries. He was born there."

She's a total racist for joking about the term African-American.
