I know some of you swabbies were Indy vets. Have you seen the latest namesake?
The Littoral Combat Ship | LCS It's done 44 knots for 4 hours in 8 foot seas. Not too shabby. Edits; Oops. That's "USS"

No matter how modern and fancy these ships get there are still those stinking yard end lights that some unfortunate electrician has to replace.

If it doesn't have JP in the water, and live roaches in the "bug juice" it will never be the Independence. Also no mention of an escalator.

Snarli,
Answering the 'legitimate' part of your question, "Littoral" infers "near shore," or "not Blue Water" operations. These two ships, Indy and Freedom (LCS-1) are two competing designs for the new class. LCS-1 is a 'standard' monohull. They will both use "Mission Modules" (which are basically ISO containers, either 20 or 40 footers) to facilitate their particular tasking, be it Mine Countermeasures, Special Operations, etc. I'm trying to figure out her manning ("personning"?). The Blue/Gold crew thing has me curious. I'm thinking they are going to operate these with the Sea Swap policy, where the ship stays in Theatre, and they rotate the crews. EDIT: Yikes! a 40-'man' crew! Four month rotations, with a two week turnaround with the relieving crew. Issue article here: Surface Warfare Enterprise Tackling LCS Manning, Training Challenges | Defense Daily | Find Articles at BNET Glad to help!

Thanks Sir, an interesting design indeed.........
Now for for you more innocent MOrons, let my above post serve as a reminder of the dangers of posting after a few too many brewskies, take note of my slanderous comments about this fine ship and the steadfast men and women of our new Navy for which I of course deeply apologize, they are in fact not all Machinist Mates .......

Interesting the things you find about someone after they're gone - I was going through Dad's Navy briefcase the other day - I found four commendations, and THREE nominations for "Sailor of The Year". Never knew about any of them.
