There are indeed professions that require college level education, but I believe that the vast majority of people would be better off if they just worked hard and saved for 4 years rather than prostrate themselves before the sheepskin.

Half of the code-monkeys that work around here have no college. They're self-taught programmers, and do a bang up job. They are mostly ex-military and older.

In defense of (some) college graduates, some people go to college to learn a skill. I learned how to help others get better, so they can go back to what they are doing. Most people try it on their own for a while, but don't get better. That's when they come to see me.

For me, it's very gratifying to help people get back to doing. Sometimes it doesn't help -- most of the time it does.

Medicinal Field? Oh, that'd be what they used to call a Professional Trade - i.e. "Learning something useful that helps others in exchange for a fair wage". It also took a commitment to Majoring in something other than "Beer Bong" and "Chase the Poontang".

To be honest I think it's great that people want to study these things. I just don't think that the taxpayers should be on the hook for it.

Oh Absolutely, theres an incredible wealth of knowledge availabe spanning thousands of years of human history alone and if you want to dedicate your life to studying Mayan ruins then knock yourself out, just don't expect me to pay for it.

believe me, I'd enjoy nothing better than living in a tent, driving around in a Land Rover and dirt bike and studying tactics and artifacts from the Second Punic Wars etc, however it don't pay the rent and I live in the real world, not the Hallowed Halls of Acadamia.

There's legitimate fields of study like Pully's medical training, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, ad nauseam that better society as a whole and deserve compensation commiserate with the skill level involved, however "proffessional students" just tryin to "find them selves" can f*ck off and get a job.
