Default Prius

I drove my dad's Prius over the weekend to my 10 year high school reunion. My parents wanted the van so they could take the kids to my brother's for my nephew's birthday party. Anyway, it was a 424 mile round trip. On the way there I got 58.5 MPG and overall it was 57.5 MPG. The whole trip cost me $20 in fuel. Holy crap.

Wow, that is awesome. I read an article about how hybrid users are learning to maximize their gas mileage by being very careful about how and when the gas engine kicks in versus running on the electric. Some people were reporting nearly 100 mpg. Neat stuff, especially if gas goes apeshirt again.

Unless your reunion is in Berkely or Boulder. But then you need to bring some sort of charm to ward off the armpit hairs.

I had a Ford Escape Hybrid as a rental. One thing that needs to be noted is how crappy these things handle. That battery is friggin heavy. Try running an obtacle course with a bowling ball in your pants.

If you're enthusiastic about vehicle dynamics, hybrids suck.

Nissan is throwing out the Leaf or something like that come 2012 as a full electric with a 100 mile range. I could see one in the drive way as 80% of our driving is less than 10 miles at a time. Keep the Gas ride for the road trips. Having driven a prius and a TDI though if I had to live with one or the other it would be a TDI. Still dont see any of them as an only car as I have to have fun now and then.

Wifey wants that new Subaru Forester Diesel that's Europe only so far. Electric isn't an option here because long drives of 100 miles or more each way are frequent. The people who try to make transportation policy for the country seem to forget that half the country is unsuitable for buses or electrics.

TDI Diesel's the way to go alright. Top Gear did a report on the total enviromental impact of a Prius vs an 3 series Bimmer. From sourcing and transporting the various base materials to assembly to operating cost the Bimmer came out about 1/2 the total cost and enviromental impact of the Prius. Try selling that to the greenies though..
