This is politics as usual. Anyone who's got a constituency with an interest in continuing to build the plane (and an interest in reelection) believes fervently that the program is critical for the future security of our country. Anyone who doesn't thinks it's a relic of the cold war and needs to go to 1) make way for current military needs, 2) reduce spending, 3) cut a "runaway defense program", or any combination.

Here is another slant on this:

CAN'T FLY, WON'T DIE - New York Post

If the Air Force says it's not needed I think we can take them at their word. Years ago the Army went through this with the Comanche helicopter. It was in developement for 20 years and it never met it's mission criteria. It was a huge sink hole and wasted billions that could have been used elsewhere.

Being a Canton GA resident I can completely understand that Marietta and the Employees of Lockheed want to keep the bird in flight. But as a realist, the operational cost of this thing is absolutely staggering. For every hour this thing flies it must have 30 hrs of service! Sounds like a bigger headache than my Triumph chopper was. There has to be a cheaper alternative. Hate it- but let it go.

I guess everyone missed the irony.

"The Democrat-controlled Congress is challenging President Obamas resolve to cut an Air Force fighter plane program - a move the White House calls the first major test of its efforts to curb runaway spending and slash unneeded projects."

Apparently the biggest spending administration of the biggest spending Party in the entire history of the entire world has the cojones to say shyt like this.

Oh, and I agree that the F-22 is unsupportable. The defense contractors finally priced themselves out of business. Still, apparently only things related to defense get slashed by Obamalama. The money they handed out to the banks would buy 12,000 F-22s.

Didn't miss it. Unfortunately all politicians are the same. When it comes to reelection, the hell with the needs of the country. I remember back when Ron Dellums was in congress and he railed against military spending saying it would be better spent on the poor. They did a base realignment and 5 bases were cut in his district alone. Needless to say he howled like a stuck pig.

Typical of that ass hole McCain, some one pat him on the back for service rendered and lead him out the back door please. His interference and bullsh*t over the AF tanker deal has already cost billions in delays and re bids and still no aircraft in sight, now he's after F22?

Ok fine, dust off those F15's and keep them in service, they're a fine a/c and should last as long as a BUFF in the air superiority role. Whats needed in Afghanistan is A10's, the finest ground attack a/c built, why not crank those out again?

As for China, it's just a red herring (pardon the pun)....We don't have the manpower or sea and airlift capacity to force a landing and fight them there, and they don't have the seapower, air or sealift capacity to fight us here. Any war with them will be nuke or economic.

No matter what Admiral Kennedy or McCain say, maintaining industrial capacity and jobs is vitally important, these two f*ckwads would have us all working at Wal*Mart for peanuts to save "the taxpayers" money and for what? to bail out another capitolist pig on Wall Street who stepped on his d*ck with gov't mandated bad loans and their own greed?.......
