Wartsila Sulzer RTA96-C - Engine

The crankshaft housing has ladders built in so you can climb down into the engine. F'ing awesome!

Look at those torque numbers. That thing can move an entire city block at 100 rpm.

They are unbelievable.

One ship we worked with had a big honkin' MAN seven cylinder (25,704 bhp).

When it was running at idle, you couldn't hear it. Rather, you could feel it. A very low frequency rumble.

The engine was started and stopped with compressed air. And, you had to stop it, then start it again in the opposite direction for 'Reverse'. And Vicki Verky.

If you were standing near one of the heads and not paying attention when they hit the air, you'd almost wet yourself.

That thing was a monster. Heck, the injectors were twenty some odd pounds.

Ken, the mechanics sometimes have to work in the crankcase, like when a bearing requires replacement.

A miserable, dirty job.

Hey! Maybe I should send that one in to Mike Rowe!

Another ship we worked on, built in the Ukraine, had reversing gas turbines. (I can just see Sarnali2 falling out of his chair!)

THAT was a strange engine room!

Cool stuff. How'd you like to have to do a bore job?

People would think that ships were using turbine engines but such is not the case. Turbines are atrocious fuel hogs. Looks like we'll be seeing piston diesels for a long time.

Looks like AirHawk's Boss Hoss is no longer the torque king.

Gas turbines are something else, from cold iron to flank in what ...15 minutes? Beats the hell out of at-sea watch sections three days before we out chop..

I love machinery, I wouldn't want to do anything else but f*ck around with heavy metal

Fer real. I had a couple of rides on Aegis cruisers and destroyers. All powered by turbines. AWESOME!

Remember the APU on the Indy, up forward under the forcastle? Took up three decks, and when they started it up, you could feel it in our shop, under the round-down. I had a snipe friend that we messcooked together, and he use to get us in that giant compartment, the diesel was 2 stories high, about 200 feet long. Exposed crankshaft, with catwalks going everywhere to access bearings and stuff. Amazing.

The damn thing is incredibly efficient, 50% thermal efficiency versus the usual 20% range. I was reading Heinlein the other day and one of his characters was picking apart IC engines. He was talking about how this stupid piston was being blown down with an explosion, the heat of which then had to be dumped, and the inherent out of balance state, etc.

I thought turbines were supposed to be more efficient than IC.
