Thumbs down "Into the Wild"

Just suffered through this movie last night.

Basic story, without spoiling it:

Self-absorbed, arrogant little pr*ck graduates from Emory U., which was paid for by his folks. (Apparently, all of his and his sisters' eccentricities are because their Dad and Mom fought on a regular basis.) He jumps in his beloved little mustard yellow Datsun, and heads West, carefully covering his tracks. He quickly loses his car to a natural disaster. But he takes the tag off of it before he leaves it. His object is to 'vanish'.

Although he completely 'disrespects' society in general, he sees no issue with taking advantage of society. Sure, he holds down an odd job here and there, but his quest is to go to Alaska. So, hitch hiking, jumping trains, going to shelters is all good. Although he has no use for 'society'.

Somewhere, early in the odyssey, he writes a check for his 'life savings', which I heard earlier in the film was the 'rest of his college fund' to OXFAM. Later, he sets fire to a pile of cash.

He ends up, finally, in an abandoned school bus (yes, a short one) in the Middle of Nowhere, AK.

Voiceovers by an actress portraying his sister, and a lot of jumping back and forth in the timeline (thankfully, well labeled) in this 2-1/2 hour 'masterpiece' by another arrogant pr*ck, Sean Penn result in a movie I wish I hadn't wasted my time with.

I was hoping the little turd would get eaten by a bear, but no such luck.

I thought the guy in real-life died miserable and alone (in that bus).

Did you get my PM?

Awwww, you spoiled the beginning! I think. I'm pretty sure I knew he croaked before I saw it.

Unfortunately, the bear didn't get Penn, either.

Ooooo! I got a PM! It's in such tiny print up there in the corner!

Why didn't he just get married? Same result.

Is this movie bad enough to achieve true b-movie badness? Is it a worthy successor to Plan 9? On Dangerous Ground? Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe? The Thin Red Line? There's some pretty tough competition here. Does it compare to Sweet November?

Oh, hell no! This one is one teeny-weenie bit different than something you'd expect on Oxygen or Lifetime ("The Channel to Slit Your Wrists With"). Liberalness overfloweth! It is to make one gag. I'm surprised some other limpwrists weren't in it.

My darlin' wife almost lost it about five times during the film. Wisely, I kept her wineglass full so she wouldn't jump around to much. I learned that trick when I saw how fired up she gets watching Florida State football. And that's when they were winning 10 or more a season!

Now- tonight, "Ghost Rider!" Ol' Nick got a Razzie for his performance in this film, which I didn't see mentioned at the Oscars.! I'm jazzed!

"Ghost Rider"? Hell, you're in for a TREAT! D'ya 'member when Nicky was in Con Air? Well, think of that movie, only you get to see them set him on fire. Too bad it doesn't seem to hurt him as much as the audience............

Smart man! And I'd bet she just thinks you want to get her drunk.
