Up from the meadows rich with corn,
Clear in the cool September morn,

The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.

Round about them orchards sweep,
Apple and peach tree fruited deep,

Fair as the garden of the Lord
To the eyes of the famished rebel horde,

On that pleasant morn of the early fall
When Lee marched over the mountain-wall;

Over the mountains winding down,
Horse and foot, into Frederick town.

Forty flags with their silver stars,
Forty flags with their crimson bars,

Flapped in the morning wind: the sun
Of noon looked down, and saw not one.

Up rose old Barbara Frietchie then,
Bowed with her fourscore years and ten;

Bravest of all in Frederick town,
She took up the flag the men hauled down;

In her attic window the staff she set,
To show that one heart was loyal yet,

Up the street came the rebel tread,
Stonewall Jackson riding ahead.

Under his slouched hat left and right
He glanced; the old flag met his sight.

'Halt!' - the dust-brown ranks stood fast.
'Fire!' - out blazed the rifle-blast.

It shivered the window, pane and sash;
It rent the banner with seam and gash.

Quick, as it fell, from the broken staff
Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarf.

She leaned far out on the window-sill,
And shook it forth with a royal will.

'Shoot, if you must, this old gray head,
But spare your country's flag,' she said.

A shade of sadness, a blush of shame,
Over the face of the leader came;

The nobler nature within him stirred
To life at that woman's deed and word;

'Who touches a hair of yon gray head
Dies like a dog! March on! he said.

All day long through Frederick street
Sounded the tread of marching feet:

All day long that free flag tost
Over the heads of the rebel host.

Ever its torn folds rose and fell
On the loyal winds that loved it well;

And through the hill-gaps sunset light
Shone over it with a warm good-night.

Barbara Frietchie's work is o'er,
And the Rebel rides on his raids nor more.

Honor to her! and let a tear
Fall, for her sake, on Stonewalls' bier.

Over Barbara Frietchie's grave,
Flag of Freedom and Union, wave!

Peace and order and beauty draw
Round they symbol of light and law;

And ever the stars above look down
On thy stars below in Frederick town!

"That is every persons right, and anyone who doesn't exercise that right has no place in this conversation."

So anybody that doesn't do what you say doesn't get any rights? Sounds like a staunch Liberal to me!

"Dammit LR, nobody is arguing that there have been racist Democrats. There were and are."

Then just drop it right there. Trying to make Democrats look like some kind of champions is stupid. JFK's kids and LBJ's kids never went to an integrated school. Neither of them lived in an integrated neighborhood. In fact, Obama's kids go to a private school in DC. Please stop trying to make them anything more than what they are, which is just a biased and racist and any rich Republican. Also, Democrats are champions of abortion rights. Keeping the murder of the unborn seems to be in their nature. How's that for sainthood?

So to sum up:

1) Democrats led the Civil Rights movement...
2) ...except for the Southern Democrats...
3) ...and the racist Northern Democrats.

And as far as the Republicans go:

1) [greater Republican support of Civil Rights Act of 1964 ignored several times now]
2) [hands over ears] "I can't hear you, hummm mmmmm..."
3) Emancipation and the 14th and 15th Amendments are so 150 years ago...

Hardly an accurate interpretation of what I said . . . but amusing.

Thanks, Matt. My Mother used to read that poem to my sister and I as we sat in the tub taking our bath. I have it in several volumes of poetry, and along with Paul Revere's Ride, it is one of my favorite pieces of Americana, and one of the many reasons why, all evidence to the contrary, I still believe in the American People.

"Who touches a hair on yon gray head
Dies like a dog. March on.", he said."

I still get chills. In many ways on both sides, the War Between The States was our finest hour. After all, how many people now would put it all on the line for a principle, right or wrong. (Quite a few, I hope, but it is speculation without proof.)

Anyway, I appreciated the poem, even though it's a Longfellow......

That's the Dems' operating basis. Grovel in front of our foreign enemies and use the power of the US Govt against other Americans.
