Actually, it's *avoiding* coffee that's the trick. Or part of it.

Well you do a lot more distance riding than I do, a couple of hundred miles a day is all I care to do.

Did you see they want to replace the Viaduct with a tunnel? starting by Royal Brougham and coming out by Myrtle Edwards I believe...estimated price tag of 2.something Billion....

Yeah, I saw that. I read The Stranger and the Times on the 'net. I think a tunnel is asinine. And the price is more like 3+ billion. Yeesh.

If there's anything I've learned by watching construction over the years - it's the fact that anything they quote to the public in the news - just multiply it by 2.875 (no more, no less) to achieve the actual Cost of Das Projekt.......

This is going to be horrendously expensive alright. In theory it's good because it opens up the waterfront whereas the Viaduct is a visual barrier between downtown and the piers restaurants and shops. From an engineering standpoint that whole area is geologically unstable, that's why the Viaduct and a lot of buildings there were damaged by the last earthquake in the first place. I think the plan is more an open trench with a lid than a true tunnel bored underground. Either way it's going to divert a great deal of money away from other needed infrastructure upgrades and repairs. Typical King County b.s.
