Doohan (and Krjr, once or twice) is the only rider that I have ever seen come into a corner sliding the front and rear, sliding mid corner, come out pushing the front while sliding the rear and wheelying out of the corner while sliding the rear, all in the same corner. I have seen Ben Bos, Eric, Gobert, Nicky and Aaron do it on Dunlops and on Superbikes, but never anyone on a 500GP machine with michelins, as much as I have seen Doohan do it. In any given race. Most guys try to be smooth because "It's the fastest way around the track".

He had an infected tooth. His head swelled so much (cue obligitory joke) that he couldn't fit his helmet on. So he sat out the race.

I agree, MO's comments are pathetic gushing about the "latest greatest ever of all time GP rider, (add name) ". Apples and oranges, guys. The riders of the past rode their bikes to the absolute limit the bikes would go to. Just like today's riders. I have no doubt that Agostini or Hailwood, or the King Roberts, Spenser, Mamola, Lawson, and all of the excellent past European champs would give Rossi fits if they were on equal bikes at their prime. Personally, if you took Rossi back in time and had him ride some of those ill handling temperamental GP machines of the past, he would probably in his drawers trying to do it at the levels the past masters rode at.

Take a good look at McCoy for the same kind of excitement. See the "We surf too" news item.

Even McCoy wasn't as generous as Doohan was when it came to putting on a show. And even McCoy wouldn't do all that in one corner. He can slide out and wheelie out, and maybe even slide in the corner, but not in the middle of the corner.

It becomes much harder to maintain that average when you increase the number of years participating and therefore the denominator in that formula.
If that were true, the list above would be loaded with young riders with short careers. It's not. |
