Lincoln,
Barros and even Rossi are hired help, they certainly have input on race bike chassis set up but they have nothing to do with running Honda or any company. Even Tadao Babba (Mr. CBR 900, 919, 954) is a just a minor player. Budgets are the source of everything in a corporation, they come from committees of business men (and a few women, very few in Japan) who may well think a "Rossi" is a type of Italian wine. If the racing director shows a benefit to the company from racing (least a new technology proving ground, preferably direct link to sales) the racing budget stays, otherwise the budget is cut. Anybody want to lay money on whether or not Honda will have a street bike to reflect the glory the RC211V is earning? You think the management of Ferrari doesn't work its butt off to link Ferrari race cars to Ferrari street cars? I guess you haven't seen the Ferrari hospitality tent at a race. It is full of the kind of people who can afford to keep a stable of Ferraris. I'm taking a guy with an F-40, an F50, BOTH Testa Rossas, etc. Mr. Bigbucks might not be able to cut a hot lap if the devil was on his tail but when he leaves the race he knows he is connected to the most successful car racing company in the world. Side note, I snagged an invitation to a major player's tent at a CART race a few years ago. Everybody should get to do this once. You are seated in the shade, in a comfortable chair, 15 feet form the race cars with a guy asking you every five minutes if you want an other (free, of course) drink, something off the menu or is there anything else I can do for you sir? I can see how a little of this treatment might make feel positively toward the company providing it. SlowBear |
