Default Right about now...

Right about now I should be pulling into camp, throwing a long, lazy 4th gear slide around the trucks and parked trailers, the first one back after the last ride of the day.

Right about now the sun is getting low in the sky, and throwing golden reflections off the pucker bushes, and the rocks over at the East end of the lake. Right about now I should be leaning my beat-up CR500 against my old Dodge pickup, and pulling my helmet off my head, watching my friends pull into camp after me.

But I’m not.

Instead I’m sitting in my wheelchair reaching for another dillauid because the freeking nerve pain is reached the point where I can’t move without another 5 mgs pain killer. While I should be getting the fire wood out of the back of my Dakota, I’m seriously thinking of turning in early, to get some sleep and maybe having a nice dream about something.

Right about now all my riding buddies and me should be standing around the fire pit, next to the empty swimming pool we’ve camped by for the last thirty years, laughing and putting each other down for silly things like wearing 40 years old leathers, and home made linkage guards made out of tin.

Right about now I should be glancing over at my old battered twenty four year old CR500R Honda that still has balls enough to keep up with about anything made, new or old, smiling and thanking God for a perfect day.

Right about now someone should be breaking out a bota bag full of good brandy, and everyone’s taking a big pull off it, sizing each other up and being proud to have each other as friends, and a lifestyle that is part gunslinger, part bull rider. And all man.

Right about now there is nothing like the open desert right before the sun goes down, the light just perfect, and it frames camp like a picture from an old memory, where Hondas and KTMs are now, Triumphs and BSA were before.

Right about now, before it gets dark, I should be un-rolling my sleeping bag in the back of my pickup, sitting on the tail-gate and peeling off my old boots and crusty socks.

Instead I’m sticking another catheter in me so I can hook myself up to the bed bag, and lay down after another day of pretending. Like that old Jessie Colin Young song says, waiting for darkness to be my blanket, to cover me with the endless night.

And take away the pain of knowing.

F*ck Dude............

Remember these words
As you pass by
As you are now
So once was I
As I am now
So you shall be
Prepare your Soul
Then follow me

I don't know if you're a religious man at all Cuddy, but prayers are comin' your way today.

The good Italian, Catholic kind.

Don't mind the guilt.

Thanks guys, I figured who'd be responding to this post. And I was right. It's a fantastic sport we share, a lifestyle like no other. All I'm saying is, be extra careful out there on the street, the A hole factor is very high now, and I don't want any of you to lose this gift.

I'm lucky I can still use my upper body, unlike some poor bastards who have to use a ventilator, and are flat on thier backs for the rest of however long they have left.

God knows I've tried to forgive that jerk who ran me down, but I just can't do it.

In an hour or so I'm hauling my dead ass into the van, and making the two hour treck to El Mirage to dig up some old ghosts, and mabe a beer or two at Murphy's bar. The desert is where I want to be anymore, all the time. Like Mr. Natural.

And you're right Taylor, maybe next time it'll be 1954 and I'll be tank-slapping through Littlerock on a Gold Star.

I can only hope...

I never know what to say, my man. So, I just say nothing.

But be assured I am With you, because woe betide the poor dumb SOB that's Against you.

For me it'd be on a Norton Dominator at the Ace sipping tea and scoping out the birds listening to that new quartet from Liverpool on the juke box, getting ready for a new burn up around the Ring Road............different strokes...

Matt,

One of my favorite quotes ever came from the NASA Flight Director Gene Krantz when Apollo 13 was in deep trouble, and the team was near panic: "Tell me what systems we have that work." It's actually a pretty good perspective on life too.

I know you miss the riding, but the camping, partying, and fellowship of your mates is still there.

Matt,

Enjoy what you have, and be thankful for what you've had.

You've still the sunrises and sunsets, the sounds and smells, and folks that love you.

Your past has all the fun and misery, the highs and lows; the celebrations and the regrets and the multitude scenes that make up the person that is you.

So, carry on! Who knows what lies before them?

In the words of a dear departed friend, MMCS (SS/MDV) Denny Hima,

(In 'Surfer-speak') "Go for it! You might fly, you don't know!"
