Personally, I think KBB and NADA guides are both total bull. They seem to take new bike MSRPs and just put them on some sort of depreciation schedule. If I could buy used Harleys for what KBB or NADA says they are worth I'd be a rich man.

Unlike car sales, the vast majority of used bikes in this country are sold person to person rather than at wholesale auctions or by dealers so consistent sources of data on actual transactions are very scarce.

eBay Motors seems to be an exception to this rule and is a really good source of information. eBay claims that a motorcycle sells every four minutes on their site on average, so it's a big database.

With eBay you loose visibility into bikes that sell locally (found the listing on eBay and connected offline... not included in the bike every 4 minutes statistic) which may actually sell for more than those that sell on the site (due to shipping costs, risk discount for buying long distance, etc.).

Last Fall, I sold a Kawasaki W650. I think KBB said the bike was worth about $2,600. I hadn't seen one sell for less than about $3,800 in years. I put it on eBay with a Buy It Now of $4,200 and I swear it sold in less than 30 minutes! A guy who lives 30 miles away from me hit my BIN as soon as he saw it. He said he had been looking for one of these in nice shape for a long time and was willing to pay my price because he wouldn't need to ship it. Of course, I only had about 1,400 miles on the bike so it was truly in mint condition as well.

You're probably fine. My '97 I think was a turd, it would cook the rec/reg at about 10k intervals like clockwork, I could alway tell because the speedo would quit working. When that happened I'd turn around and head for the barn, usually good for 5 or 6 miles before it croaked.

I loved the bike but in the end got tired of messing with it.

I just bought a 2003 CBR 600rr from an ad on Craigs list for $5000 dollars which is $1000 shy of KBB and $1200-1400 dollars less than what others were asking for their bikes. It's like any shopping... BE A SMART COMSUMER!!!!
