Yes, but it's still got more in common with the old one than the '04+ Sporty.

Default I'll tell you why.

Because H-D is trying to achieve a very difficult balancing act.

H-D has made a very successful business selling "American classics," so even though they have the resources, they're not likely to start making anything resembling a true sportbike or real naked hooligan bike (yes, they've got Buell for that). So they're taking a position that no one else owns and one that is part of their heritage--the flat track-style bike. It enables them to attempt to attract a new buyer; as we all know, sporty bikes are king in Europe. The V-Rod line sells better in Europe than the U.S., but I assume that it's still not a bonified mainstream hit. A niche bike, yes, but one that is still not really designed for European roads or prevailing tastes. The trick is to be distinctive in the market and still give people something they desire.

The XR1200 allows them to get their feet into the sporty bike segment without facing too much direct competiton and retaining their core brand values and equity.

The questions remain, though: Is it still a half measure? And will Europeans get excited over a street tracker? (Remember that they do have dirt track and speedway racing there, too.) I gather that H-D is asking themselves the very same questions, which is why it want to gauge reaction.

It's a tired subject, and one that doesn't want to be recognized by some, but H-D knows that they're facing a demographic shift and certainly don't have a lock on European market, which presents a huge opportunity for growth. They're trying to figure out ways to cultivate it. Smart.

But...are bikes like these enough to do that? I don't know. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a cool bike and one that has a customer. I just don't know how many there will be.

If anyone can make it work, H-D can. But I'm sure they understand there will be a lot to learn, as they have with the V-Rod line.

Default B-King

Blech.

Perhaps it'll look better in person, but that exhaust is total cartoon material.

Well said! I'm talking location -- as it weather/terrain -- NOT race or even culture. *sheesh*

*grin* Actually, they all look like bicycles with with 300-400 lbs of motor, cables, bodywork, etc. added if we're getting technical. I was just saying the styling didn't seem all that "fresh" nor very "classic" but whatever floats your boat.

The rest of the styling's sweet, but I've gotta agree that tail exhaust looks like a reject from an industrial design class project.
