Automatic transmissions would probably double (at least) the number of female riders.

We tend to underestimate how intimidating the notion of shifting is to many people (men included.)

I met two guys at the Honda exhibit at the Long beach international motorcycle show a few years ago. They were Honda Silver Wing scooter riders. Had both traded in their Wings of Gold for Wings of Silver. Basically they said you won't believe how fast the Silver Wing is until you ride one. Pretty amazing to think that Goldwing riders would be happy to be riding scooters. But they were dead serious.

So yeah - I bet there's a market out there for 850cc scooters. Way more of a market than back in 2005 when this thread started, because of what has happened to gas prices. The whole motorcycle market has widened.
