Perhaps the British courts will also rule that because he was a law student, he was driving as a part of his training to help provide legal advice to poor children and therefore should be imune from civil penalties?

Oh, that only works for congressmen from South Dakota...

I don't think this is about whether motorcyclists should receive special protection - I would settle for equal protection. If this happened to a pedestrian, would the result have been the same? Probably not. A reckless driver, driving illegally would have been more severely punished. Notwithstanding the derogatory lawyer comments already posted, if this had occurred in this country you can bet that assuming the driver had any insurance or assets, he would be severely penalized in a civil suit. Civil suits against cage-drivers remain our only real recourse.

Maybe some good ol' English biker hooligans busting skulls would show 'em.

Now that you mention it, it will be interesting to see if and how the British riders respond. Will they take to the streets?... implore their local representatives?... or drink more beer like we Americans did?

MO needs to create a new moderation category for "poetic".

When I read the story I was thinking I was thinking exactly that. If somone did that to me I would shoot them. But you are right in the UK you couldn't do that. God that sucks.

What a nice introduction to the English class system... one member of the proper set maims some poor slob, another (the judge) lets him off with a token punishment.
