If you are going to ride fast, you need to pick the right time and place. NO traffic, NO side streets, NO cops. The view should be clear for a long way in front of you. Riding fast in traffic is extremely stupid. DON'T DO IT. That being said I have had my CBR1100XX up to 155 (under clear and safe road conditions). Got up to speed VERY quickly, looked at the speedo, - was like, ok, fast enough. throttled down, got to about 90, a big black crow flew across the road very low & slow several hundred feet in front of me. Made me think.

There aren't too many tracks that let you completely wind out your bike. I think you could count all of them on one hand in North America.

Mosport, Road Atlanta, MAYBE Sebring if you run the big config, VIR - maybe, Laguna Seca - maybe, and of course ovals (but who runs ovals?)

I know a few people here that could do with eating a little crow.

265kph indicated on my 2000 VFR. NOt for a few seconds, either. Raced my father (on identical bikes) from Saskatchewan River Crossing to ROcky Mountain House (home) flat out the whole way. 190 Km trip took just under 1 hour. That includes slowing down for traffic and a lot of sweeping turns. I wasn't so much concerned about mine or other's safety, but about what a sustained 12000rpm might do to my engine. Didn't seem to hurt her though, that ***** is bulletproof. Took a few months off the life of a Pirelli Diablo though.

This is the one rare instance where I say the lawyer deserved every penny you paid him. Considering the insurance hike, fines, loss of your license, etc. $1500 is not a bad deal.

I've done 286km/h indicated repeatedly (realistically, very close to 180mph since the tach went on a ways after that) on my gsx-r 1000. I regularly ride through twisty roads at full chat and cruising speed is 130km/h (80mph).

Screw it. I only live once. Riding slow is safe - but is it really living?

That said, I have many years on a bike both dirt and road (14 all told) and have never been down on the road. I also have many years competing on just about everything so my reaction times and my ability to see potential hazards is far beyond the average person's, I've discovered. The point being there - take courses, learn to ride on a track and look way, way ahead at where you want to go!

All that said, if you aren't comfortable at high speeds then listen to your fear and back the hell off. If you're not comfortable, you can/will panic if something happens - you need to be sharp as a needle at over 200km/h.

I agree with most of the thoughts here about choosing your place to speed. In a city is not the place, not only because it is dangerous, but because there are too many piggies around. With that being said, I have done an indicated 186mph many many a times (so many that I stopped counting) on my '02 GSX-R1000. I have had my Camaro SS pinned past 155mph chasing down crazy sportbike riders on the freeway (at night). I don't think you are a criminal by speeding. AS LONG as you don't hurt anyone else, how is it a crime? Like the old adage, "If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?"

I went 112 mph once on my 1970 Kawasaki W2SS-650. Since this bike was really a direct copy of a pre-unit BSA 650, had a doubleleading front shoe brake, vibrated like a .50cal machine gun and had the rear wheel slightly out of true I think it should count as 200mph.

One the other hand 125 on my GSX seems like 75 in comparison.

Maybe there should be extra points for how dangerous your bike is at speed.

The trophy then should go to anyone who ever topped out his Kawasaki 750 Triple.

Haha! Cheers to that! My triple was the worst handling, worst braking bike ever!

And I still love that motor.

Since the road has been finished I have only been as far as Cooper Landing on a bike and avoided it during construction. Torn up highways as you know are nasty for high speed work as those people in colored vests carrying signs tend to get in the way. I usually just take a shot down past Portage and turn around. If I had a faster bike I'm sure I would need a little more road for the 180 mph stuff. Even though I carry a radar detector I tend to keep it to 85 on most good straight stretches since the troopers watch them (well not always 85). I like the small straights between turns as you can round the corner, nail it and slow before there is much chance of getting caught. On trips to Fairbanks there are plenty of good straights but the pavement has deteriorated. I was running with a stiff supension set up a couple of years ago and hit a frost heave at 115 and the Triumph almost threw me. The beast has a tendency to rebound hard at the rear if set too high. Thanks for the tip, I will check out that section of road on the bike, know where your talking about.
