I've got the name of a former girlfriend: "Wendy" tattooed on my....... ah,......junk.

When it's in the down-position, it sez: "Wy".

I was at a nude beach in the Caribbean one time, saw this obviously local dude - HIS junk had a "Wy" tatt as well (it's not like I was looking, I just happened to notice): same font, same colour, same everything. I was like "WTF" - so I asked him about it, then told him what mine said.

He replied "I don't have your girlfriends' name - mine says 'Welcome to Jamaica Mon! Have a Nice Dey!' "

too bad that many of us have to wait for someone with enough garnered respect in the motorcycling world to write this before people will sit up and take notice. that said, great article, fred - but what you've written about is unfortunately only one of the ways that we collectively shoot ourselves in the foot.

the entire industry's marketing and reporting channels need a makeover as well. take for example these quotes from MO articles:

"I would say high-speed freeway riding is where the 650R really excels. It's remarkable to be able to sail along on the freeway at 80 or 90 mph on a "budget" motorcycle without it feeling like it will shake itself apart or that it's using every last bit of power."

"...this bike would definitely be happier, as would the rider, either zipping along at triple digit speeds or winding up the throttle through some serpentine mountain pass."

"The motor is buzzy above 6,000 rpm, but it is geared fairly tall and cruising at 80... is fairly comfortable."

While the adrenaline junkies in the group bemoaned the 500's mild-mannered acceleration, the bike cruises ably even at 100 mph."

"On the freeway, the KLX performed admirably, with triple digit speeds possible. The KLX cruised at a sustained 80mph easily on the freeway"

"...we hit the Autopista for the commute back to Malaga at speeds ranging from a low of 170 kph to a high of 250 kph (105-155 mph) this is nuts, sustained nuts for over an hour. As we blast en masse through the scattered cars..."

where is it reasonable to drive at these speeds on public roads? but the thought is still implanted in our heads by the motorcycling press and manufacturers: who would buy a bike that can't do two/three times the legal limit with a twist of the wrist...? (i suppose the other half of the problem is that many seek an identity in motorcycling, and as a result, they are very easily given that identity by moto-manufacturers and race-oriented reporting.)

pants.

Where is it reasonable?

Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska......... Speed Limit is 75. Cops won't bother anyone going 80.
