I'll concede that, indeed some are.

Some are molded by selfishness that only an "Upwardly Mobile" consumer-credit-driven society can muster.

the trouble with this line of thought is that it is easy to extend it to motorcycling of any kind.

"you ride a bike? you must be crazy. i've got an uncle/cousin/aunt/brother who had one and he'll never walk again. anyone who rides a bike is out of his/her minds!"

the answer to the stunter craze is not to criticize and marginalize, it is to sanction it, as is already happening in various parts of the country. embrace it by putting on organized events that take place at the relative safety of the track, where there are no cars and/or innocent bystanders. and yes, acknowledge it at industry events.

no one wants to see these stunts performed out on public streets, but one of the things that drives public displays is an undercurrent of resentment by the mainstream motorcyling community. that resentment is pretty obvious in fred's editorial.

if we actively try to marginize the activity do you think it will stop? that's a bit like the theory that if you just stop sex educational programs, teen pregnancy will go away.

in case you haven't noticed, teen pregnancy has not gone away.

and neither has stunting.

How dare you criticize King Rocky's edicts?

Motorcyclists were treated as s***** and second-class citizens when motorcycles were incapable of stunting at all. Adding a few stuntaz to the mix won't change anything.

After all, currently any car driver can purposefully murder you and get off simply by lying and claiming he didn't see you. How could it be worse?

Exactly. In Europe, the vast majority of bikers ride smaller stock bikes (and even more scooters) for basic transportation. Sure there are the "Ghost Riders" and those who have 'murican style rides, but it's no more common with bikes than with cars. Europeans, in general, also do not have the same feelings of entitlement that we do. They are much more regulated (especially when it comes to licensing) and yet have not lost their "right" to ride.

I'm not saying that we can or should emulate the European model, but it's interesting that much of what is claimed to be impossible works quite well across the pond. And has for some time.

If the motorcycling community actually addressed the issues that the public cared about (noise, hooligans...) calling out the illegal and anti-social activities for what they are, the public might not group us all together. Instead, we use our resources to defend our rights to ride helmetless, violate basic noise ordinances, and basically act like 2 yr. olds.
