Default Wow!

You win a Che Gabevara T-Shirt. You're the only poster who actually got the point of my column.

Do you think I was too obtuse?

Actually, the first quarter turn of the throttle on the Gixxer Thou just returns some damn fine, well controlled forward motion. It's that last 1/8 of turn.....

While I don't want to start another cruiser/sportbike haterade party, I think you hit on something important at the end of your post. Us old guys started out on something cheap, and easily repaired. and had our rookie crashes at fairly low speeds.

I don't really know if a middle aged guy just learning how to ride is more dangerous than a kid with cash or not, but I know EXACTLY what testosterone poisoning feels like.

a couple in my MSF class got their licenses in Hawaii before they moved back to the AU just to avoid this whole thing.

Yeah, I find that 'respectfully' stuff kinda creepy. too. So, with the utmost disrespect, I would disdainfully, quibble. Certainly, I concur that, if we don't, metaphorically, grow a set, it's just a matter of time until until we discover that Orwell was not wrong, only pessimistic.

Conceding all that, don't you think we still ought to require some kind of competence to operate something that will go 180 mph. or the quarter in ten seconds?

Oh yes they would. In fact they do, over here in the UK, and in the rest of the EU too. 883's can be restricted, if necessary, then opend up (?!) later.

I say 'follow the money' what do insurance companies, who size this stuff up for a living have to say? You KNOW it's going to be sport bikes, followed closely by middle aged newbies, because those are the categories that have kinda identified themselves, mostly in opposition to, and criticism of, each other. Keep this up, and you will both be paying higher insurance premiums.

In summary, testosterone and alcohol, while good things in and of themselves, can be fatal if overutilized.

Yeah, it's that half inch of booze in the bottom of the bottle that does all the damage.
