Thanks Ms. Cuddy - thought you were older than me. I graduated high school in '71 and still feel like the kid on the block.

First bike? CB100. Would buy one if I could find one.

In 2001 I bought an XR100 for...uh...my kid.

So lemme get this straight, you bought a bike and you never rode it? And then you wrote a long story how many straps you used to secure it on the truck bed?

I give you a writing tip: if you bother to mention details such as you secured the bike with 4 straps the story has to get some benefit from it. Like all of them broke, bike fell off the truck through a wind screen of a pale blue Crown Vic killing a lawyer whose wife you bonked pregnant the night of the funeral. (I use lawyer as an example so nobody would get offended.)

Very nice article! You are entertaining, you actually should do some more writing. But one question, what the heck is "rotary valve"? Is it one of those stupid americanisms like "top end" and "duche"?

"But one question, what the heck is "rotary valve"?"

No. But the only rotary valve I know of are used in two stokes. I am not up on Jawas so forgive me if I am wrong.

The rotary valve is a often a disk that has a slot cut in it. It is used control the "intake timing" on two stroke engines.

It is very common on model airplane engines and was used on motorcycles for a while.

After a while I guess they figured out reeds where cheap, simple, and worked just about as well on motorcycles so they have fallen out of use. At least that is what I have been told.

BTW two stroke model airplane motors can make some crazy power.

My first bike was a Bridgestone 200, back when they made motorcycles too, and it also had rotary valves. They provided more latitude in port timing, and, yes, I think reed valves replaced them. It wasn't all that fast, but it went places that are best left undisclosed.

Thanks MO for posting the story, and a thank you to all the MOrons out there for reading it, (and the nice comments).

Now if you'll excuse me it's time to fog out the neighborhood with some acrid Castrol R exhaust from the mighty Trail 90.

Mmmmm, bean oil...

Must be an older version - IE 6 and 7 block popups. I've just started demo'ing 7 - if you've used Firefox, you've used 7 - it's basically a ripoff of Firefox (even the *look* is similar).
