I figured that would be the "bush" you were commenting on. Tomsmith was talking about the "other" bush. (wink, nudge)

This is pretty much why I stay out of these political debates. If you try to make a point that you're better off with an elected government in control of things as opposed to multinational corporations in control you get accused of being a socialist/comunist/bolshovik/trotskyit baby raper and get invited to leave.

These guys will be standing in the unemployment line still talking about how great Bush is, oh wait, unemployment is one of those "expensive wastefull government programs" we need to get rid of when we "trim the fat"

Reminds you of Ernst Rohm shouting Heil Hitler when the SS (under Hitlers orders) had him shot. That's enough of politics for me, I'll leave it in your hands, KP. Did you see the latest Tim Eyman bull *****?

I don't want to be run by big companies, but I also don't want to be controlled by trial lawyers, big unions and Greenpeace. All extremes are like Facists and Communists which are run by dictators like Hitler, Kim Jung Il or Castro - you can hardly tell them apart. Some people kid themselves thinking the far left elitists give anyone any more voice than the far right. The polls say correctly that Bush is doing a lousy job, and the left is doing even worse. You are right that the middle is best.

I guess that I have to kill time somehow while I'm saving up for my next bike and getting my arthritis and reflexes good enough so I can ride it without falling over. Maybe I'll look up the Swedish Bikini Team while my wife isn't looking.

"I'll leave it in your hands, KP. Did you see the latest Tim Eyman bull *****?" Yep sad.. His logic is "Who needs a state legislature we could just have government by referendum i.e a pure democracy. " Noone would vote for higher taxes. There would be no money for schools, highways, etc. The state gas tax has been the same amount of cents per gallon for years. When the legislature said hey lets do something about the bad roads etc. Lets get back to the same percentage tax per gallon used in the 60s i.e a logical idea. So they raise it a few cents. Now in terms of inflation we finally get the same amount of money as percentage of the economy going towards a gas tax for new roads and then Eybutt comes along...Then people wonder why companies leave WA state when it takes 1 hour to go 15 miles on 405 cause we haven't built a frackin new highway in 20 years... OK I better go back to bikes. Good post sarnali.

Re: Um, we figured it out already

Sarnali, please note that my original comment was in response to another poster who was wishing for a socialistic system like Sweden's, not yours. And KPaul, ditto. The fact is that the government is populated by far too many hacks that care for you about as much as those corporate big wigs that are lining their pockets on failed corporate policy. They're in it for the patronage. And they are no more accountable for their actions than the corporate villians. No matter what party is in control, they will make a mess of most things. Vote one party out and the other brings more incompetence.

Government is good at a few things and terrible at many. Do you have any idea what the taxes are where I live? Just as one example, we've countless police officers working in high-dollar incorporated villages who do nothing but write traffic and parking tickets (to raise more revenue) that are working for outrageous union wages. Ditto for the two local county forces. Know why? Because the police unions have a disproportionate amount of political power and a few years ago they strong-armed the county government into an insane contract. And the Republicans who were in charge were crooked and stupid enougn to agree to their demands. The Dems are just as bad. It was one of the main reasons why Nassau County, NY--one of the richest counties in the country--was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Guess who's paying the bills now? My friend was just telling me that his property taxes went up 45% last year. Is that good and fair fiscal policy?

And plese don't accuse people of being Nazis--it's just a cheap shot and totally unwarranted. That fact is that socialist states have immense problems, always have. And our system, while imperfect, has usually faired far better. I'm not against some measure of help for people who need it, but I want people to be able to stand on their own, not be lulled into the false security of a welfare state that robs people of incentive.

The U.S. basically ensures the security of all of these wonderful European states. If we remade ourselves in the image of Sweden/Germany/France/Spain, I doubt any of them would be around for much longer.

A year to get a doctors appointment?

Your friend can't possibly be living in the same country in the same millenia that I am?

Sure, you might have to wait anything from 30 seconds to 4 hours in the ER if you go there, or wait up to a month for a specialist appointment if a general practicioner can't help you.

But as a person who has grown up in Sweden, lived in the US for a while and then moved back to Sweden, I can tell you that unless you are particulary well off, the higher taxes are well worth it.

That's what the man (and woman) said. I don't know why their experiences are different from yours. Oh, and don't get me wrong, they love most things about Sweden (as I'm sure I would). Then again, my friend is an actor and film maker that genuinely feels he shouldn't have to work for a living, or at least he should be able to do whatever he wants and be compensated for it.

I didn't mean to imply anyone was a nazi. I was using that as an analogy of someone who was hopelessly deluded.
