Defending the U.S. made Wing vs the Harley
 
The Wing costs $17,999. For that you get a state of the art engine:
[*]A huge part of that is due to the Gold WingÂ’s 1832cc

overhead cam horizontally opposed six-cylinder

engine. As youÂ’d expect from any engine this big with

the name "Honda" on the valve covers, it makes plenty

of power. As youÂ’d expect from a Gold Wing, the

power is smooth, thanks to an engine counterbalancing

system which spins the transmission input shaft,

clutch and alternator opposite from the crank. Fuel

injection means engine response is exact and precise,

whether your trip takes you to a Colorado

mountain peak in November or a Louisiana bayou in

June. And thereÂ’s even an electric reverse! *

Lots of onboard storage:
[*]Luggage? Forget about bungee-cording a gym bag

Anyone can moderate. Longride and Buzglyd are the usual suspects. I thing Winger makes a great point. I you are looking for a touring motorcycle for $17,000, I don't think Harley is even in the game. If you are looking for a Poser Tourer sounds like an oxymoron to me, then you would buy a Harley. Even then the Yamaha is superior. But the Harley does have the snob appeal and resell value.

You are right, even though Yamaha may be better, Harley's resell value and snob appeal is hard to ignore. I keep thinking HD resale value is a baby boomer thing i.e. when we run out of boomers then values will go down. So far time is proving my theory wrong, much to longride and Buzglyd's delight.

Being partial to Yamaha, because of family ties, does not get them out of the fact that chrome plastic is still plastic. On the other hand, having a Road King doesn't justify paying $3k extra for the "real" chrome. Between Ness, Baron and the the rest of the metric aftermarket I'm sure that I can take a few $$ and find "real" chrome for a Yam. I do think that the Victory came up short by default. I realize that MO has been sitting on this bike for a while but the real comparison should have used a Kingpin Dlx. The Vegas based Kingpin would have locked down 2nd and maybe even gotten into first. The transmission gremlins have been exorsized, mostly. The syling is on par with most "low volume" American cruisers and cost half the money. And it would have the pwer advantage hands down. I don't know about you but the next comparo should make things difficult. With the new 2k Kaw and the RocketIII both costing less money than a MSRP (yeah, right) HD the cruiser world should get pretty interesting.
