The fairing was designed in a wind tunnel, alright - by Hellen Keller. Man, is that thing ever ugly! The bike has no flow, it's got stuff hanging all over it, a clothesline on wheels. 61 HP? That was years ago, fellas. BTW - it's a boxer - how badly does it surge?

I forgot to add that all the above comments about BMW reliability are just fine, but there have been at least two big-number surveys (Bike magazine might have sponsored one) that indicated Honda motorcycles are the most trouble-free bikes on the market. That's one of many reasons I ditched my '98 R1100R and bought an ST1100 - the relaiable choice of LD riders world-wide.

If they try for function over form, why did they go out of their way to make it ugly. I love bikes where form does follow function - if I got a BMW, it'd be an R1150R - basically no styling crap at all, just a bike.

In truth, its real claim to fame is 007 out running various SUVs and a helicopter all with pillion in tow.

I'm betting that the vast majority of these posts are from people who have never owned a Beemer and are locked into their cookie-cutter sub - $8,000 machines. Talk's cheap, too...

#1. I don't think it's so ugly at all, personally. Lots of bikes look better in the flesh, but this one doesn't even look that bad in photos to me.

#2. I just got back from riding Cycle World's test unit from NC over the past 5 or 6 days, and 61 hp is somehow enough to push that big fairing nicely along at 80-90 mph all day--over 100 now and then--and still return 40ish mpg. Ever had a bike with a heated seat? Nice on chilly September mornings in Cheyenne. So's the cruise control.

#3. I agree; most of you flamers probably never have owned a BMW.

I suppose when all is said and done, comments from people who are in the market for such a bike are all that matter. If you would never even consider one anyway, I don't thnk BMW are out to change your mind!!
