He was just reacting to my overstated posting by insinuating that my inteligence based eugenics program was no better than Hitler's ancestry based plan. After all, it does have the same weakness: who's the judge? Don't go after him for making the obvious comparison. Maybe go after him for not recognizing that I was making a bit of a socratic argument.

Also, the pointy German helmets favoured by movie outlaw bikers were imperial german, not nazi era, IIRC.

It was also written 225 years ago to deal with an entirely different set of realitys, thats why there have been a number of ammendments over the years, 17th century political thought doesn't always translate well, except on talk radio.

Good points all, but please tell me how my wife wearing a sting bikini, me carrying a concealed firearm or you walking in a cave in a state park impinges on anyoneÂ’s freedoms.

Well, what does your wife look like? Her wearing scant clothin might impinge on my right to hold my lunch, after all.

Default Helmets should be ILLEGAL!

OK, so this is a rehashed rant, but you brought it up, you can deal with it...

Let us apply some logic to the argument. We are concerned about social costs and social improvements. I am absolutely sure that our current well intentioned, freedom loving, completely ethical, freely elected, beloved, Ashcroft administration would agree with me completely.

Given:

1. Helmets allow riders to walk away from accidents that would kill or maim unhelmeted riders,

2. If racers are any indication, helmets allow riders to walk away from crashes that occur at immorally high speeds, SPEEDS FAR EXCEEDING ANY POSTED LIMIT!!!,

3. Bikers are the s***** of the earth and a menace to society,

4. All right thinking soccer moms, yuppies on cell phones make a point of squashing bikers,

5. Removal of motorcycle hooligans from the streets would improve the welfare of the general public by eliminating speed, noise, and other behavior that might corrupt the youth of America.

We conclude that helmets should be made illegal. Anyone caught with a Snell/DOT full-face helmet should be put immediately to death, or at least exiled to somewhere that has no twisty roads.

That is my opinion, and I'm keeping my helmet on until they peel its cold, dead straps off my chin!

I'm Italian, I've come to this country 4 years ago. I used to drive like my speedo started on the last number (180 Km/h on my 1800 pounds/1.1 liter engine car, regularly reached every single day on my way back home). Speed limits? BS: they're too low, it's actually dangerous because when you're on the highway @ 80 miles/hour, you may fall asleep. Helmets? Yeah, right, in the winter they protect you from the chill, but in the summer it's too dangerous.

You know what? After getting a ticket a year (usually within the first month after coming back from vacation in Italy!) I learned how to go SLOW. Helmet? I had bought a half helmet and a 3/4 for winter; I have dropped the former and wore the latter for the whole summer. As long as I have a spare 150, I'm gonna buy a full one.

I have completely changed the way to look at things. Even if every time I go back to Italy I MUST speed like an idiot, I realize how dangerous it is, and I believe that law must protect people, may or may not have the power to prevent YOU from committing suicide, but MUST prevent innocent people from being killed by your idiocy.

Said so, helmet laws may be right or wrong, helmets are nice, good looking, and confortable!

My 5 "lire" (ooops, they tell me they have "euros", now!).

Yes, but will your marginally competent literate individual's interpretation be "valid"? (Quoting your reply to the thread started by RichardNixon up above.)

Yes, I have read it and some of the Federalist papers. The language is intelligible, but that doesn't mean you and I (or anyone else) are going to reach the same conclusions.

As for relying on the Founding Fathers, I think Eric makes a decisive point in an earlier thread: even they couldn't agree.

Default This is such a joke.

My mom has a picture of me as a very very small boy riding on the back of my dads motorcycle without a helmet in shorts and a t-shirt. every day I thank god I'm still alive and have to ask my self what the hell were they thinking?

One of the most important things I learned in the Army was to trust my equipment with my life. I had to carry helmet, mask, flak.... No one says.... "Hey I think Bostrom should race without a helmet." Now i don't ride a sport bike.. and I don't ride a cruiser. But it seems like the cruiser folk are the ones "cruising for a bruising" Only it's worse than that... Why on earth would you want to die ugly? Thats why I put on a full face helmet. You might have to carry that smashed up head around the after life... It's so simple in my mind. If I want to increase the odds of getting on my motorcycle after a involentary dis-mount. I'm going to put on the helmet. The best helmet I can get actually. I'm putting on the jacket with the armor. I'm putting on the gloves with the funny little knuckle protectors. If I'm out for a day ride I even put on the boots with the ankle protection. I do this because ***** happens and I've been in bad situations where my gear has made the difference between life and death. And I can tell you that some tests you only get to take once in your life. Testing your head against a tree, pavement, car bumper, brick wall, rocky shoulder, signs, mail boxes to name a few. Your nuts... And then you rant about how it's not about insurance costs or being responsible to your family enough to at least prepare for the worst.... Of coarse it's about insurance this time. By setting helmet laws aside your crusade has proven that helmets make a difference. A BIG DIFFERENCE Would you helmetless Platos rather have the state make a choice on who gets treatment? Based on? how much insurance you carry? Or the chance that you will be drawing social security from a bed for the rest of your life?[b]

To be honest your helmetless position just does not make sense to me.

Nice to hear from you, you elitist BMW riding commie. Sounds like you already fell off your bike without a helmet. Having difficulty following a rational argument?

If you feel that you are too dumb to manage life's little risks on your own, move to Iran. They will be happy to tell you what to do and what to think. If you want to be free man in a free country, stick around and start thinking for your self.

PS I always wear a full face helmet jacket and boots. By the way, how much do you weigh?
