My vote is for one or more carbs running really rich.

And as far as modifying the pipes, there was an article in some magazine years back where they tested a 'Wing with a bunch of 'performance' exhausts against the OEM system on a dyno.

There was almost no gain in grunt with any of the systems. Apparently, those six jugs can breathe just fine with the stock pipes.

On a 1200 Wing what would the other two pipes be connected to?

Actually, the article I referred to was for the later 'Wings (GL1500 ->). So they did have a half-dozen cylinders, which renders my pithy comment rather moot, don't it?
