All I have is a sawed off pistol grip shotgun, I don't think a silencer will work on the ol' blunderbuss

I think you're referring to the "Snake Lock." I had one years ago, but lost the damn keys in a drunken stupor. Next day I spent hours with a Makita and carbon wheel hacking through it to get the HD free. Couldn't touch it with cutters, saws, etc. Luckily I lived on my sailboat in a working boatyard and they took pity on me.

In your case only the first round will be audible, anyhow.

The example given in the article said the thief was "riding ..." the stolen bike. So he either jumped the ignition somehow, or the owner left the keys in the ignition while "going in a store for just a second..."

I'll bet on the latter. And that's just plain iggerant!

Those folks didn't stay in business for many years by attracting attention with bolt cutters and cutting wheels. I'll bet they mostly stole the "easy ones" that could just be ridden away.

If you have a pair of Channel Lock pliers you can steal most FLH Harleys. 80% of the owners just lock the keyswitch on the tank dash panel, and don't bother with the fork lock. You can grab the big handy switch with the pliers and turn it. It's easier than popping the ignition out of GM cars used to be, and that was pretty easy.

To me, at least, there is not a lot lower life form than a motorcycle theif. Doesn't matter to me what brand they were stealing. Drawing and quartering is too good for them. I hope they get to be in prison with cellmates whose bikes were stolen (and are still pi$$ed off about it) when they were on the outside. Hope whoever "Cash's" cellmate is makes "Cash" his b1tch...and shares him...
