Don't forget the "unexpected" switch to the "new" mixture every year.

Uh, NO. State and Fed taxes are roughly $0.48/gallon, last I read (may vary slightly state to state).

A barrel of light, sweet crude (44US gallons) makes something like 76 gallons of gasoline, or 105 gallons of diesel (varies according to sources), PLUS multiple other "byproducts", including LPG and lubricating oils, base-chemicals for use in plastics, etc.

Of course, the number for gasoline is somewhat misleading, as there are so many other chemicals added to it to bring it "up to spec" for any given oil companies' particular blend

Good call.

If you get the chance, knock the punk off the BMW HP2 that zooms around the town.

To claim that 44 gallons of crude makes 76 gallons of gasoline or 105 gallons of diesel is a violation of the law of Conservation of Mass.

This would be like claiming that one gallon of sour mash can be distillled into three gallons of whiskey, or that one gallon of beef stock can be refined into five gallons of demiglace.

The only exceptions of which I'm aware are ice cream and beer. You certainly can eat a pint of ice cream (1/3 to 1/2 lb.) and gain three pounds. Drink one 12oz. beer (the one your wife told you not to have) and you'll gain a pound and a half.

But other than that? Nope, sorry. The process of "refining" cannot make less into more.

I don't work in a refinery, so I don't know. I read this two or three years ago, and my "assumption" was that other chemicals were added to the fuel, and that the 44-gallon "base stock" turned-out each of the quoted quantities of fuel. My bad, in re-reading I see I didn't really word that well.

Sorry.

Clear as mud now?

Oil company profit was about $0.05 per gallon according to the last data I read. Far less than $0.48

I'm still amazed that the ditto-heads were actually stupid enough to believe that Haliburton was gonna sell 'em that stolen oil cheaper than Saddam would have.
