Default Re: What makes a motorcycle a ''Chick's bike''?

My wife really loved her EX500. The seat height is pretty low and the bike is pretty narrow. It took her about 2 years to want more power, and she's now on an SV650, which she can't get her feet flat on, but it's close. She's about 5'6" but with pretty long legs. Good ground clearance and low seat height are somewhat mutually exclusive from an engineering standpoint. Good luck.

There's some truth to HD's sales dominance, but it's far from the whole story.

HD has sold about 270-310,000 bikes/year for the past few years. Honda sells about the same number, Yamaha about 180,000 and Suzuki and Kawasaki sell about 90,000. That means the Japanese. Therefore, the Japanese manufacturers sell about 660,000 bikes per year. All other manufacturers I will guesstimate at about 40,000. That means non-Harleys account for about 700,000 of 1M bikes sold in the US. Let's assume that of that 700,000, half are "full-size". That would mean that there are ~350,000 "full size" non-HDs sold per year. That means that HDs account for less than half (~45%)of all "full size" MCs sold each year in the US. My totally unscientific guess is that they account for about 75% of all women riders.

OK, enough babbling through a lot of pseudo- statistical guesstimates. My basic point is that women ride HDs in disproportionate numbers to what HD represent in the marketplace; substantially disproportionate numbers. I'm not sure why this is and although it's a curious fact to me, it doesn't affect my buying decisions one bit.

If anybody has real numbers on this I'd appreciate it.

I moved out of Michigan about 4 years ago, but I still have many family and friends there and I visit ~4x/year. Michigan is in a bad spot right now. They've been in the top 5 for highest unemployment rate for a few years now. The RE market is absolutely brutal and has been for at least 2 years. It crashed long before the rest of the country started to slow down. Some areas are worse than others and some market niches are doing ok, but in general times are tough throughout the state.

A lot of women by HDs because HD *wants* to sell to women. Been to a dealer lately? They really have a lot of stuff for women riders, including SERIOUS riders, not just fashion plates who sit on the back. Not only that, Harley has a lot of parts that can be used to set their bikes up for shorter people (ie, many women); not just to help them reach the ground, but also to reach the handlebars and controls. They've done a lot of listening and a lot of designing to reach that market, and I have to admit that the market is responding. A lot of the women I know are buying Harleys, and although I have no interest in cruisers (I ride a Honda 599, as you may recall) I have to admit that my friends manage to find bikes that fit them well and make them smile. You just can't beat that.
