It's hard to beat the Nighthawk for practicality and durability... as well as low maintenance.

I think they were designed expressly for the sort of riding you described.

Yeah, and the top ends wears out in 5000 miles, and bone heads HD mechs work on it. No thanks.

Make mine ZREX.

The KLR600/650 has to be the everybike in all of this. Cheap, easy to maintain, durable, adequate performance, etc. You may even get it dirty!

Actually, any big bore dual sport will fit the bill. The KLR650 and DR650 are the more roadworthy ones.

Kawasaki EX500 or Suzuki GS500F. Both of these bikes are plenty powerful enough to get you into trouble (even with a better half aboard), have been made largely unchanged for over a decade and a half, and can be had for about 5 large. Both are very comfortable bikes that can easily handle any on-road job you can throw at them.

Lots of bikes would work for this mission. Like has been said, keep looking at the classifieds for a good deal on a low mileage used bike. Concours, Nighthawk, SV or DL 650, mid-sized Kwak, all good choices.

another vote for the kawasaki EX500. you might outgrow it slower than the GS500F.
