I just sold my daily commuter cage (still have the family transport) to remove the temptation to cage-it if the weather gets gray. I live in CA so the weather is almost always rideable (sic?). One $12 fill up every two weeks vs. one $70 fill-up every 10 days. It makes a difference.

Actually, gasoline is going to go back to $2.00 so I wouldn't worry about it.

Anything that gets 40+ mpg is good enough for me.

The only thing I think about fuel mileage on my bikes is that two of them get worse fuel mileage than a Toyota Prius. Not a good sign for our motorcycling future when some cars get better mileage than bikes.

The good news; the cost of gas should reach about $2 per gallon within a year and a barrel of oil will drop below $30.

The bad news: The cost of gas should reach about $2 per gallon within a year.

BURN THE EARTH !!!!!

Mileage was the factor that convinced My accountant (ie:wife) that a Motorcycle was a worthy investment. I went from 40$ a week to 16$ on my daily commute. Paid cash for the bike and haven't looked back. Mrs is quite pleased with the financial end of it as well.

The cost of bike vs. car ownership usually works against the bike. When you consider the longevity of tires and their cost, the maintenance requirements and other issues, several cars work out to be cheaper to operate per given distance traveled.

However, to paraphrase that old saw, "A bad day on a motorcycle is better than a good day in a cage!"

Speaking of which, I need to jump on the bike and get some lunch!

You'd think that KitchenPatrol would be all over this with a yard long list of crackpot websites.

I agree, at $3 a gallon the overall cost of 40 vs 50 mpg is pretty hard to distinguish. a mere 1.5 cents a mile, as the ratio is exponential and the average american drives only 15000 miles a year, savings drop off quickly after 35+ mpg

My s3 gets 45mpg reliably, but 300 bucks a year on tires and $10 a quart oil really make a dent in my savings (1 set of tires and 2 oil changes for a 12000 mile year ) I have a sneaking suspicion it is a near wash with my 25mpg v6 altima

In the end I like to tell myself I am reducing petroleum consumption while having fun. Your personal delusions may have varied effect.
