In spite of all the jokes, it looks to work very well.

The Germans originally tested with fresh corpses and prison inmates (the inmates were promised reduced sentences if they survived). That is the practical way to do it, and a lot more interesting. Whatever happened? Did remorse set in? Was it too hard to prop a corpse ona Goldwing?

I know how they can save a lot of money. Just do the testing as a "Reality Show". Thousands of idiots will volunteer.

I should have mentioned that the use of corpses & inmates was in the early days of auto airbags. I saw a video of an inmate driving his Mercedes off the road and into a telephone pole - the airbag worked and he survived, but seemed a little shaken.

Default Focus on Abstaining from Accidents, not Protecting from Them

I'm somewhat shocked by the positive feedback regarding the working motorcycle airbag.

I think we should be teaching motorcyclists to abstain completely from having accidents, rather than enabling them to have airbag protected accidents.

Clearly, all this talk of airbag protected accidents, and safety devices will just lead to more risky behavior and accidents.

It seems like it's a sucess, but the idea of an airbag on a bike scares the bejezzus out of me

hmmm...how many actual collisions would this effect?

- low sides? nope. unless the build in side-curtain airbags like in volvos.

- high sides? sometimes - and only when the mc hits something, not when your chain breaks, or...

- side hits (e.g. the infamous "left turn failure to look") - nope.

seems like that japanese system that inflates a bag around the rider (inside the suit) - like the michelin man - is more to the ticket. bounce down the road in your own personal air bubble! whee!

Talk about missing the point. I got in my car this morning and said, 'boy, I think I'll see how well this airbag and seatbelt work!'

This is in no way a license to do the stupid. It's protection against ACCIDENTS...and they do happen. They happen when motorcyclist are well trained or not.

The debate over helmet laws aside, I believe this is an honest attempt and successful one to add to the well being of us who choose to ride.
