You're right about that. Too many Californians are too likely to try to pet the bear. Watched too many Disney cartoons.......

I believe you're correct. I'm from Northwester Montana (Glacier National Park) and we have plenty of Grizzlies there, but I live in California now. To my knowledge, there USED to be Grizzlies (hence the golden bear on the CA flag), but they were hunted to extinction in the CA area during the Gold Rush. We have black bears for sure, and wild Squidlings and Winebears to avoid. *grin*

Up in MT I got cornered by a pair of badgers once on a logging road while on my first moto, sped past a couple of moose, and of course have dodged many a deer crossing my path, but that's the first time I've heard of a bear spin.

I can top this. Was riding trails in Santa Ynez Sunday when a black panther crossed the trail ahead of me. No not Eldridge Cleaver. Large black feline variety. I was not drinking. Michael jackson neverland ranch is in the area, I think he was having disgruntled employee problems. Hmmmm... ?

The last Grizzly was shot and killed in California in 1919. I've encountered black bears several times when riding forest service roads and they always run away at the sight and sound of my old BMW.

I was riding along the Savage River Rd. last weekend when, from nowhere, a Chipmunk darted straight for my front wheel. In moment of sheer terror, I froze, squishing his massive head with my front tire. I was concerned that those massive teeth may have punctured the tire, or worse, sliced through the rim, so I stopped to investigate. At that point, another Chipmunk darted from the woods straight for me. All went black until I awoke to find a passer-bye had stopped to help me. I figured the Chipmunk would have finished me off, but is must have been driven off by the Good Samaritan. Thank God for caring people. And keep an eye out for those Chipmunks. They're pure evil.
