I'm going down to my Suzuki dealer and asking for the "Roethlisberger" bike. The old farts want to blame the sport bikes (rice rockets) and the young guys want to blame the old farts (slow reacting cruisers) and the meadia just wants a story.

Ride, have fun and to hell with them all.

Ride ON!

O' and be careful.

An excellent well written column!

Many in my family have been badgering me to hang up my helmet for 30 years now. And when I have taken a dump, I've had to listen to the "I TOLD YOU SO's"

I'll admit the possibility of permanent serious injury or even death is on my mind. My main worry is not being able to take care of my family. Or even worse being a burden on them like my old riding buddy Lou who was put in a wheel chair last December by a stupid teen aged girl.

Hypervigilance and all the protective gear I can put on is my answer to this. I don't think I'll ever cure myself of the need to be on two wheels. So, all I can do is be careful and take all the precautions available.

I'm used to people who don't ride counseling me, "Motorcycles are dangerous," as if this thought had never occurred to me.

In 32 years of riding, I've gone down four times. That doesn't mean that I won't be killed tomorrow. It just means that for any activity involving risk, risk management is essential to survival.

Wow! I don't think I've ever heard it put so succinctly. Well said!

Thanks, M Tsai !

This past weekend I was trying to find a can of chain lube at a local Kawasaki dealership and while walking through the sales room I overhear the salesman respond to this tall guy looking at the bikes, "so you just got your license and you want a ZX14?" Theres a pause and then the guy says, "well what do you recommend?"

I would have liked to have hung around to hear how that conversation ended. That would have never happened at the Kawasaki dealer here in my hometown. They would have tried to sell him something more suitable to a beginner or not sold him anything at all.
