I went to trade school before I went to the University myself and I firmly believe that a complete education has to include a certain amount of the rolling up of one's sleeves and getting one's hands dirty, so to speak. That way you don't get so much of the pie-in-the-sky number crunching that leads nowhere.

I agree with you seruzawa. Solace points out a difference between the Candian and U.S. higher education system. Colleges in Canada are more akin to Tech schools here in the U.S. In the U.S. most accredited Electrical engineering programs require lab experience in both the 2nd year Circuits class and 3rd year Electronics class. Every graduate should know how to use a scope and meter. If not I would questiong their schools accreditation and qualifications. I do agree with you that pratical experience is the best teacher. I learned much in my internship at a small company where you had to do it all. Design, Build and Troubleshooting.

Now there's something worth debating over.

yeah, we are not the marines. and until I am in a fox hole I am very glad of that fact, you are comparing apples to oranges here. we are the best at what we do, mostly because noone else does it. the same could be said about the marines.
