Perhaps the story will make it downunder someday..but then I don't watch 60 mins

Sorry...although the guy is obviously talented mechanically, he is a self absorbed, spoiled, arrested adolescent. But then, most of us older guys who ride probably fit in that last category. :)

When I saw that special they had on him, with Kid Rock (two of a kind) he came off badly, I thought. That over-the-top Macho deal usually is an over compensation for some self-esteem/masculinity insecurity issues.

A must see? Who cares? These knuckleheads are SO over. This is a news item? This is the best we can do?

The kitchen remodeling job isn't going so well. Maybe THAT explains my bitterness.

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

My new take on remodeling is, if you can't afford to have someone do it, you can probably live without the changes. Thats 40 years of frustration and aggravation trying to be Joe Handyman. The pro's do it every day...they can do it better, faster...maybe not cheaper. Life is short...why go looking for misery?

Who gives a phuk.

The guys got talent and he's good at what he does, but I for one couldn't give a phuk less what he has say.

The only way 60 Minuets could make this interesting is if it's an ambush. Bring him in and confront him on not actually doing d!ck on the shows, and how they treat the people who actually do the work. Maybe ask him why he brought Hot-Rod culture down to the WWF level of public perception. And when their done, bring in the Teutles and make it an hour special.

Finally, a news show that's not afraid to get to the essence of motorcycling: antisocial welders building unrideable bikes for dope dealers, pimps, and rappers.

All those cable shows can't be wrong, can they?

Maybe spoiled wasn't the right word...how about, he believes the image that has been created for him. Kinda like those wanna-be gangster rappers, who end up getting shot by real gang members.

Sorry, already got that sock drawer rearrangement thing on the schedule. From what I've seen he seems like a poseur contemporary "Rebel without a clue".

I was working security at a beer taste/jazz concert last year, and Jesse was there. I didn't talk to him, but some of the other guards said he was kindova jerkweed.

naco_traficante 02-21-2005 03:10 AM

He's on 60 Minutes and we're not

He might be a self-absorbed wrench-monkey but he is a brand name and has a national show. What made this guy different from all the other builders who never make it big ? Hopefully THAT is the angle 60 Minutes is going to explore, not just his latest tattoo.

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

Maybe they will uncover that the JJ on TV is sort of a fictional caricaturized cartoon of the actual JJ, who is, or at one time was, a pretty normal, actually nicer guy than most, who's really talented at building stuff. Not his fault all the media attention has probably caused a few changes in the way he now has to interface the rest of the world, is it?

Tigercub 02-21-2005 06:44 AM

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

If my profession or hobby was remodeling I'd do lots of it around our house. But, everytime I try to repair or rebuild something I run into cheap materials thrown together by someone who couldn't care less about their work. I found that one should only buy the absolute best quality fixtures etc. There is so much cheap junk out there it isn't worth the effort or money to haul it home. The part of the job that I can do the best ends up being the cheapest part anyway. And never, ever dig your own ditch for sprinklers, spas or whatever. That is the hardest work to do and usually costs only a few dollars by someone who does it for a living - God bless them.

Tigercub 02-21-2005 06:52 AM

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

I agree MO - "a must see". Having rebuilt motorcycles, ground up and fabricated parts from "weldable steel" using MAPP gas from OSH, drilling holes with a hand drill when I should've just bought a drill press - like years ago. I can appreciate the skill and effort Jesse James puts into his business. He is a very talented guy and worked hard to be the successful, independent a$$hole he has made himself out to be. What else can I say - here I am writing to an on-line magazine from my boring job imagining what a real life might be like!

nokneedragin 02-21-2005 10:58 AM

Talk about "must miss TV"

I can't even make it through a whole episode of monster (waste of time) garage. No knock on the guys talents, the whole image over substance thing just drives me nuts.

I'm with you on the Monster Garage thing noknee. I love tinkering, and even enjoy watching other's making something better, but I just don't get why anyone would enjoy watching a group of otherwise talented men making a weed whacker out of a Sikorsky sky crane. VWW

They lost me when they destroyed that '72 El Camino.

Of all the cars they could've done that to, and saved from the crusher, if only temporarily.

60 Minutes? When's the last time they did an accurate report on anything?

seruzawa 02-21-2005 02:15 PM

Re: Talk about

Maybe if they cut the show's running time in half it would be more endurable. It's way too padded out. And the commentary is too hyperbolic in the desperation to create something of interest where there is none.

Sort of like trying to make soccer exciting. All the overblown commentary in the world won't stop the zzzzzzzzz...........

Grass growing is, after all, grass growing, even if Geraldo Rivera is telling you that it's the most exciting thing on earth.

allbikesbiker 02-21-2005 03:03 PM

Re: Talk about

I watch it on occasion.

the two things that bother me the most about that show are

the "try to excite me" music.

the over the top 'voice over' loser who is also attempting to make me feel excited about ... ahhh.. something or other.

sometimes interesting, sometimes innovative. most times, ho hum.

if I'm home I'll watch his 20 min spot.

oh, and my opinion on Jesse himself?

I think he's doing ok for all the fame.

I'm not sure I'd be that much different.... sans the tattoos.:)

Maybe Dan Rather will roll out an Evo-engined chopper Jesse built in 1971.

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

I hope they ask him his opinion of the soft RUBs buying his creations. According to his hard persona, he should hate them. But he loves them for their money. Cognitive dissonance would be fun to watch.

JJ seems like the Donald Trump of the biker world -- the name has eclipsed the accomplishments. Anyone for a photoshop of the DonaldÂ’s combover on JJ?

But IÂ’ll probably listen to it while IÂ’m chopping up/installing backerboardÂ… if I remember.

Does JJ on 60mins mean he has officially "jumped the shark?"

seruzawa 02-22-2005 02:55 AM

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

Donald Trump of the biker world? Doubt it. After all, it was DT's father who built the empire. DT is only notable for his ability to dominate the media. Also he's probably the only person who could lose money running a casino.

Maybe JJ should start his own reality show. They could call it "JJ's Rubbies". Each week a Rubbie would be shot from a cannon across the snake river on the bike he bought from JJ.

I guess I've got that cognitive dissonance thing too today.

I find it kind of curious that that he would be on sixty minutes not for his chopper company, but for this overexposing-milk-the-cow-for-all-it's-worth show.

I thought after marrying a porn star and then proceeding to give each other beatings and subsequently divorce papers, he would have learned to be a bit more demure.

Donald Trump is the biggest con artist next to Dean Kamen (I believe that's the name of the inventor of the Segway.)

I'd be willing to bet $1000 that his net worth is a negative integer.

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

I loved the fawning, c**ksucking story on him that was done in Cycle World years back, before he hit big. Jesse mentioned not wanting to build bikes for rich a$$holes. So what was he charging? Something like $60,000 at the time, IIRC.

Yeah, keepin' it real.

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

I find it odd that in my family I am the only one who rides motorcycles and also the only one who has never seen one of these chopper shows on the tele.

Whenever my motorcycle habit comes up in conversation with people who don't ride motorcycles many times one of the first things they ask me (sometimes before or after they tell me about the friend of a friend who lost a leg/arm/head/etc. on a motorcycle) is, "Have you ever seen that chopper show on cable?" No, I haven't.

Whenever I talk to people who ride motorcycles about riding motorcycles we never talk about these chopper show.

Hmmm...starting to see an association here...

I couldn't tell ya! I know it's not Jesse James though - the name thing is something else he's playing out.

Re: Monster Garage's Jesse James on ''60 Minutes Wednesday,'' Feb. 23 on CBS

I saw the show last night:

Did he really say that HD riders were "dorks"?

He seemed to equate "coolness" with one's ability to buy one of the 20 bikes he cranks out a year. At least he well understands the superficiality of his RUB audience.

One of his bikes at 140 mph??? That's one bike test I want no part of.

Much like a Moonie, he's selling a way of life for the confused. Listen to the prophet JJ. Sell all your worldly possessions. Buy the Cool. Be the Cool....

Jesse James 60 Minutes Interview

Regarding the clueless interviewer, I wonder how many times they had to reel JJ in.

"What's the difference between your bikes and Harley-Davidsons?" Sheesh.

Having been interviewed a couple of times myself by reporters (who were making an honest effort to get the story right), I know how easily they can completely screw up your comments, be they in print or on tape.
