The article isn't very detailed, so I wonder what the specifics of the chase are. I don't think that the police should just let people go when they run, but they should make every attempt to end a chase quickly or discontinue it. They must realize that if a person runs for 5 miles (at least > 3 minutes), they aren't going to stop willingly. The chase will only end in an accident that may involve just the criminal, or it may end up in tragedy. Do you want the police taking that risk through your local streets?

Like I said, I wouldn't want them to just let the criminal get away, but the speeds through surface streets must have been pretty high to 'instantly' kill the 3 people.

Who needs a shotgun when an out-of-control SUV is this effective. Pack 'em all into an alley and do a "Running of the Bulls". Just don't tell them that there's SUV's coming from both ends of the alley.

Unfortunately, everyone lost in this incident...the bikers, the children and the nineteen year old -- no one won. This is not a Janklow situation, this is a flip'n nineteen year old kid that screwed up in major many ways and if you're not asking why then, you too are part of the problem. And don't tell me you knew everything there was to know about life at nineteen, so *****-off.

Definitely a good issue to debate, to chase or not to chase. I don't have any stats but I wonder if there is something compiled like "average number by-standers injured per police chase". A lot of things could factor in on the issue- who's being chased, serious nature of the crime, surrounding environment (e.g. city, suburb, country, etc.).

Right, running 50 or more mph through the local streets doesn't seem worth the risk unless your chasing Bin Laden. If you're one of the bikers or bikers relative or friend then you probably say it's not worth it. If you're a relative or friend of the next kid this guy molests then you say yeah it's worth it. A tough call.

Big bulls eye on our back (and front and sides for that matter). I don't know how many of you read books like Proficient Motorcycling or articles on riding like Grodsky's page or two in Rider. Maybe some think you have to be old and stodgy to read that stuff.

I believe it is great information and can easily save your butt one day (maybe even on your next ride). I'm not suggesting at all that the bikers killed by the molester were not riding aware or safe or without proper riding gear (something else I am a huge proponent of). I just think Buzglyd brings up a great point that should not be forgotten- no matter your skills, years of riding experience, or how lucky you think you might be- it can happen to you. What I'm saying is give yourself every possible advantage to eliminate or minimize the risk you take by riding a motorcycle.

It's exhausting for me when I tell someone or they find out I ride motorcycles and the first thing they do is tell me how dangerous it is and how they heard this story once about a guy who cracked this, got run over by that, drove off a tall cliff and got hit by a 747, whatever. It doesn't have to be as dangerous as that.

You can enjoy this sport from mere child to- health withstanding- senior (and even senior senior) citizen. The risk is always there but you can certainly do a lot to enjoy this sport to the fullest and go out the right way. Say like cancer or a good ol' fashion heart attack.

Every time an innocent bystander is killed or injured in a police chase the police involved should recieve the same punishment as the pursuee. Unless the police have some excuse, like due to prior knowledge the pursuit was to stop some wacko with a trunk load of dynamite on the way to a grade school, there is no justifiable reason to let these bozos endanger the public that they are supposed to be protecting. If you and I can be ticketed for "endangering the public" for riding our motorcycles 10 or 20 mph over the posted limit on deserted country roads why should these jokers think it's alright to chase some drunk at speeds of over 100mph on city streets? Police are just average mortals, they possess no super human skills nor do the people they persue. VWW

A local (suburban NJ) Policeman works out at the same Gym where I do lunchtimes. It happens that I asked him a few weeks ago about a rumor I'd hear a long time ago that NY Police, at least, were prohibited from pursuing bikes at <80 MPH. He didn't know about this specific rule, but said that he often works shifts as dispatcher and that when he does, he almost never authorizes pursuit of any vehicle (barring kidnapped Children in the car, crazies on rampages, etc.) due to liability issues.

(Of course, it happens that back in friendly NYC, I was pursued quite aggressively for what had previously been fairly safe but subsequently turned into fairly hairy lane splitting on the Henry Hudson.)
