reliability of modern bikes? i used to think so, too. not so sure any more. consider the new 1.8-liter gold wings: frames are snapping like year-old pretzels, electronic modules are going up in smoke, and engines are overheating.

back in '77 i bought a GL1100 that never so much as hickuped.

interesting you should launch this thread.

i've been browsing e-bay lately for a mid-70s R/60 or R/70. i'm attracted to the fact that while they are not trouble-free, they are designed and built to be serviced and to last a very, very long time. i really like that.

so many bikes today are built like zippo lighters: ride 'em 'til they puke then toss 'em in the bin.

Go figure? Your Scorp has a 660cc Yam engine, a simple carb, it's light & narrow as a split rail fence, and it gets what, 55mpg?

If the nearest dealer hadn't been six hours away, that might have been my first bike.

Yep, the GB500 was a single. My bad; I keep forgetting the details on that bike, but I do remember the look, and the wrist pain from long-distance riding.

Default Not a question, really,

more of a request for comments. I don't judge a rider by what they ride, but by how they ride. And how they ride used to require knowing the machine to a level that a modern rider would find appaling. And that's fine, really.

Default Apologies for the late reply,

Chaos at the house of blixco, lately.

In any event, I'm all for it! I'd like to pick up something other than my GPz for such a ride, though. Maybe something along the lines of my One True Lust, a 1970's Norton 850.

Default Late reply, apologies.

In the UK, there's a magazine called the Classic Bike Guide. CBG should be available in your area if you have a decent newsstand. They have excellent articles on the finer points of owning and finding old bikes, plus a really great ad section (I find myself wanting to expat to the UK just to buy out everything in the ad section).
