I'd look at the Honda XR650L or Suzuki DRZ400S before I'd consider the KLR. They are both lighter. The Honda is faster and even more trouble free.
The DRZ is pretty fast and is a great off road mount as well and would probably be my first choice. With a pipe and jet kit, it is a damn nice bike. The KTM's are nice but you will pay quite a bit more for them. Get on www.thumpertalk.com and post some questions about dualsport bikes there. Many guys are running these as motard bikes also with 17" rims.

If you buy the XR get the power up kit. The bike really responds to it, without making it scary.
