Back Story: Blake Young Out For "Months" After Barber Test Crash

Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Wisconsin native and Yoshimura Suzuki rider Blake Young crashed at the recent Barber test and was left with lingering back issues, which have now been diagnosed as crushed or compressed vertebrae. This can be a very serious injury and others who have suffered severe cases have been warned not to ride until the area is fully healed.

While most enthusiasts are familiar with the 1993 "tragedy at Misano" where Wayne Rainey crashed while leading the Italian Grand Prix, suffering a paralyzing injury that ended his career, many are not aware that Rainey actually suffered damaged vertebrae earlier in the season in a crash at Donington Park.

Rainey crashed Saturday afternoon at Donington in the late July British GP, "crushing" several vertebrae. Because he was competing for a fourth world title, he raced at Donington but in considerable pain. Then came the Italian GP on September 5 and Rainey's last crash on a motorcycle. While there is no way to conclusively prove that Rainey's weakened back was a factor in his ultimately being paralyzed later in the season, it does underscore that damaged vertebrae is a very serious injury.

Young's friend and riding coach (1993 500 word champion) Kevin Schwantz canceled his trip to Silverstone MotoGP last week and instead flew to Madison to be be with Young. They then traveled to California, where Young is seeing different doctors including Dr. Art Ting.

Young's absence will presumably give the Yoshimura team an opportunity to race Australian Josh Waters.
